The Salvation Army works with some of the most vulnerable people in society. As we continue to face healthcare challenges, high fuel costs and other problems, people on the margins need us now more than ever.
From running food banks and checking up on people who live alone and giving practical and spiritual support, Salvation Army churches all over the country are responding to the crisis in dozens of different ways.
In Sheringham we provide a Food Bank (by appointment 9am-4pm / Monday - Friday / 01263 826059) and in January 2023 we opened our Sheringham Food Club. Its purpose is to make food available for sale at substantially reduced prices to help people struggling with the rising cost of living and particularly those on a low income. Toiletries will also be on sale. Fresh fruit and vegetables with some other items are free to members when purchasing other items. A limited supply of sanitary products will be free.
In January 2024 we opened our Welcome Space (Thursdays 10am-1pm) offering locals a safe place to stay warm, have a hot drink or snack and meet new people. Visitors can join in with board games, read the papers, knit, use the WIFI, speak to church leaders or sit and have time to be quiet or reflect. There is no need to book - just pop in.
Our Welcome Space adds another layer of support for vulnerable individuals or those who have been affected by the ongoing cost of living crisis and will operate concurrently with our existing Community Drop-In advice sessions, Food Bank (Emergency Provision) and Food Club (Community Store).
Opening times, Monday & Thursday 10am-1pm, Friday 1pm-4pm.
The Food Club is a ‘not for profit’ enterprise set up with various partners including Norfolk Community Foundation. Anyone living locally can join the club for an annual £5 subscription. Food is available at substantially reduced prices. Application forms and further information available from the Food Club or Charity Shop.
Local support for jobseekers
We provide information and practical guidance for people looking for work.
As a leading provider within the voluntary sector we provide a bridge between people affected by unemployment and the local labour market.
Employment Plus (E+) Local is a church-led initiative providing a local centre where people experiencing unemployment can find information and guidance on their journey into employment within a supportive environment.
Attending an E+ Local is entirely voluntary and the service is available to any person who is looking for work. We run our Employment Plus as an integrated part of our weekly Thursday morning Community Drop-In (10am-12pm). To book an appointment with our team, please call on 01263 826059 or just pop-in .
Activities at an E+ Local deliver back-to-work support and provide computers and internet facilities to assist job searches and the Government’s digital inclusion strategy.
Local Salvation Army churches and community centres seek to serve the community in which they are based. When people come through our doors asking for help with issues such as unemployment, we feel we need to do something about it. Employment Plus Local is testament to our desire to give people in need time, support and compassion.
“Work for All’ was a cornerstone of our founder William Booth’s social programme. Even today, independent evidence demonstrates that good, worthwhile work is important to physical, mental and spiritual health. Employment can improve self-confidence and contribute to personal, family and community welfare.
Employment Plus Locals
Becoming part of a community where you are building your confidence, skills, and discovering new things about yourself - these are some of the positive benefits we've seen people gain from being in work, volunteering or taking part in a work-experience placement through the help of The Salvation Army. Find out more/employment-plus/local-support-jobseekers
Those engaging with the Employment Plus local will benefit from support such as:
- Assisted job searches
- Digital inclusion
- Benefits advice and support
- A listening ear
- Support for digital inclusion. Digital skills are increasingly important for enabling current social participation. Digital inclusion means ensuring people have physical access to the internet as well as the necessary skills, confidence and capabilities to use it. This includes digital assistance for people with their EU Settled Status application.
Supporting Whole-Person Health in Sheringham
The Parish Nurse scheme at Sheringham Salvation Army offers compassionate, holistic health support to individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs. Led by Nia Heycocks, a Registered Nurse (RN) and Queen’s Nurse (QN), the service is designed to provide physical, mental, social, and spiritual wellbeing in order to improve the lives of people within our local community.
Nia qualified as a nurse in 2002 at the University of Wales in Bangor and brings a wealth of experience from various areas of nursing. She is registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and holds a current DBS check. As Sheringham’s Parish Nurse, Nia provides personal health advice, advocacy, and support with navigating treatment plans and accessing appropriate care. While she does not offer clinical treatments such as dressings or injections, she works closely with local GP surgeries, hospitals, and pharmacies to ensure individuals receive the care they need.
Current activities include:
- Bereavement Support Group – 1st and 3rd Friday of each month, 10:00–11:00am at the Salvation Army Hall.
- Free Health Checks – 3rd Thursday of each month, 10:00–11:30am at the Salvation Army Hall.
- Clinic at Sheringham Medical Practice – Tuesdays, 09:15–12:15 (appointments via the practice; for registered patients only).
- Home Visits – Available by appointment.
Nia also offers the opportunity to explore the spiritual aspects of health care, if desired, and ensures confidentiality in all interactions. Support is available to anyone, regardless of faith.
The Parish Nurse scheme is supported by Parish Nursing Ministries UK (PNMUK), a national charity that promotes and develops the concept of Parish Nursing across churches and organisations. PNMUK ensures professional frameworks are in place, facilitates study days and peer support opportunities for Parish Nurses, and is part of the International Parish Nurse Resource Centre. Their ethos centres on whole-person care - supporting physical, mental, and spiritual health, and encouraging more churches to appoint Parish Nurses to serve their communities.
If you require support from our Parish Nurse, please call the Salvation Army Hall weekdays from 9am–4.30pm on 07586570976 / 01263 826059 or email nia.heycocks@salvationarmy.org.uk.
