Families have a ‘hoppy’ Easter at Hackney Mare Street Salvation Army!

published on 2 Apr 2026

More than 100 people celebrated Easter with The Salvation Army in London at a special event organised for families earlier this week.

Hackney Mare Street Salvation Army held an Easter Family Fun Day at the church on Tuesday which saw over 60 children and 40 adults enjoy a range of crafts, activities and the Easter story. Six craft stations were set up with different activities including making bunny ears hats, decorating crosses, Easter handprint chick cards, bag decorating, chick models and an Easter tomb garden scene made from biscuits, icing and chocolate. There was also a face painter who was kept very busy by the children who attended!

The Salvation Army also served a delicious hot meal of beef or vegan cottage pie followed by ice-cream to round off the morning’s fun. This was supported by charity ‘Feast with Us’ who provided a volunteer to prepare and cook the food alongside staff and volunteers from Hackney Mare Street Salvation Army.

The Easter Bunny was a feature at a family fun day organised by Hackney Mare Street Salvation Army.

Salvation Army church leader, Mary Dunn said: “We organised this family fun day as we are continuously seeing families on a low income who want to access free or low-cost activities and safe, warm spaces to go especially during school holidays.

“Some of the families we support are living in hotel rooms with little space for their children to play. We also understand how some parents rely on free school meals for their children and during the school holidays this isn’t available, so we wanted our event to help relieve some of that worry.

“We had a great day, and it was wonderful to see the children having so much fun and families enjoying being together and sharing a meal. A big thank you to all our brilliant volunteers and Feast with Us who also worked hard to make the day such a success.”

Cottage pie was the dish of the day at the Easter family fun day.

Other activities at Hackney Mare Street Salvation Army include a weekly baby and toddler group, a clothing upcycling workshop and an art therapy group. For more information visit https://www.salvationarmy.org.uk/hackney-mare-street
