Community turns back the clock at SA Coventry City's School Assembly Big Sing
published on 11 Jun 2026
The sound of familiar hymns echoed through The Salvation Army in Coventry City last weekend as people of all ages gathered to relive a cherished part of their childhood at the School Assembly Big Sing.
What began as a simple invitation to revisit favourite school assembly songs quickly became an afternoon filled with laughter, nostalgia and heartfelt singing, as attendees travelled back to a time of polished school shoes, favourite school meals, favourite subjects, and morning assemblies and voices raised in songs.
The event brought together both young and old, proving that some songs never lose their power to unite generations. For many, it was a chance to reconnect with treasured memories of school life. For younger attendees, it was an opportunity to discover the songs that shaped the childhoods of parents and grandparents.
Ahead of the event, members of the community were invited to vote for their favourite assembly songs, helping to create a playlist that reflected decades of shared experiences. When the results were revealed, there was little surprise that 'Sing Hosanna' claimed the top spot, sparking enthusiastic singing throughout the room.
The community's top ten assembly songs were:
Sing Hosanna
This Little Light of Mine
All Things Bright and Beautiful
Lord of the Dance
He's Got the Whole World in His Hands
Morning Has Broken
When a Knight Won His Spurs
One More Step Along the World I Go
He Who Would Valiant Be
Shine, Jesus, Shine
Several much-loved classics narrowly missed out on the top ten, including Colours of Day, Autumn Days, My Lighthouse, Think of a World Without Any Flowers and If I Were a Butterfly.
Major Jenny Forman, church leader at The Salvation Army Coventry City, said: "The response was wonderful. Music has a unique way of unlocking memories and bringing people together, and that's exactly what happened. It was lovely to see different generations singing side by side, sharing stories and enjoying songs that have remained part of our collective memory for so many years. There was a real sense of joy, community and connection throughout the afternoon."
The Salvation Army Coventry City continues to offer a vibrant weekly programme for people of all ages, including knitting groups, toddler groups and youth clubs, music groups and a community café.
