We are first and foremost a Christian Church. What we do is because of our faith. However that does not mean that we exclude those who do not share what we believe. There is a very special welcome for everyone at The Salvation Army.
Our Celebration Meetings, held on a Sunday at 11am, give us opportunity to reflect on the past week, to look ahead to the next, to see what God may be saying to us at this time, and to allow His Holy Spirit to empower and equip us. Each week may differ and may be led by our church leader or someone within the church or elsewhere. The gatherings are informal. There will be a 'menu' of many different things, recognising that some find some things more helpful than others. You do not have to have a faith to attend. You may just be exploring or wanting to check it out. But there will be space to pray, to reflect. We will listen to music. We will sing some hymns and songs. We will share refreshments together. Our gatherings seek to be intergenerational, and are informal. We are not professional in approach or presentation, we do not have robust music, or a beautiful theatre type hall to meet in. However we are family, we are serious about what we do, and meeting together is really important. Meeting new people is important too. Most Sundays we hold our Sanctuary Children's Ministry, so during our Celebration Meeting there are age related activities for children.
As a Christian Church we recognise that we can chat with God, as well as just be in His Presence, is so important to us. We are here if it would be helpful to you, to listen to you, to pray with you and believe with you that God hears what we share. If you have a prayer request please email us, or visit us at the centre. We have prayer cards that can be completed and these are often read in our Celebration Meetings.
As a Christian Church we believe it is important to have space to reflect, to listen, to share, to be in a place where not just isolation, but in community, we can seek to meet with God, and hear something from His Spirit, and from His People. The Bible continues to be the best selling book in the world, and we believe that we need to be seeking to find space to read it, unpack it, and apply it to our lives. On a Friday from 1.30pm we follow our Sanctuary Cafe, with Sanctuary Space, and over refreshments and cake, we stop and pause together - listening to music, opening The Bible, working on a theme, and we hope, able to leave having had some opportunity to meet with Jesus and hear His Word. Anyone is welcome to this space, whether or not you profess any faith.

Throughout the week The Sanctuary Project seeks to meet people where they are, and make some difference to their day.
Our centre opens on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, to serve refreshments and provide a warm and welcoming space, but in addition we also provide the community wardrobe (by referral), laundry and shower facilities. On a Friday you can book an appointment to meet someone from our employment plus services. We can also signpost you to other local services, or to Salvation Army services such as debt advise and family tracing.
There really is a very warm and special welcome for everyone!
We are grateful to be well served by our community centre manager, Stuart, and our community assistant, Christine. BUT equally a fantastic team of volunteers.
The Community Wardrobe is usually open on a Wednesday but an appointment is required.

Our hall, our centre, is located on the world famous Portobello Road. The road is famous for its market which has operated throughout the week, but especially at weekends, for generations. The wider area of Notting Hill is well known for the location or reference in many films, from Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and the song - Portobello Road, to Notting Hill and Paddington.
Our hall, our centre is a Sanctuary where anyone is welcome and can come. It is a Christian Church, opened to all, with a heart for its community,
As you enter our building there is a small entrance with toilets either side, and a shower block. You will then enter into our Hall, our worship hall, our community centre, which houses our Corner Shop, selling goods for raising funds. You will see as you enter the kitchen hatch, open as a sign that we are here to serve you. To the left is a door leading down a small corridor to the community lounge, a small space where people can sit and chat away from the busyness of the main hall. To the right of this room is the Quiet Room, another small space to reflect, to retreat, to sit on your own, with others. A place to pray and be prayed with. Straight ahead out of the community lounge is our community garden - a fantastic space where you can equally retreat and just be.
Our facilities are available to the public. To you. Do come and enjoy this special place of sanctuary.
The Corner Shop is located in a corner of our centre, and sells books, bric a brac, clothing, gifts and so much more. We do not sell electricals. All money raised goes to support the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army in Notting Hill. In addition we sell cards created by Handmade by Grace and Hope (search for them on facebook to see the wide range of cards available). The Corner Shop is accessed when our centre is open, so mainly on a Tuesday and Friday.
Donations towards the shop would be gratefully received - we are looking for new or preloved items.
We respectfully ask that any donations are of good quality. We have NO outlets to get rid of other peoples unwanted items that are not able to be sold. We are unable to collect. We are unable to take furnitire. We are unable to take electricals.
OUR DOCTRINES – what we believe
The Salvation Army is a Christian organisation and part of the universal Christian Church.
Its message and the lifestyle it advocates are based on the Bible's teaching. Its work is to make known the good news about Jesus Christ and to persuade people to become his followers.
We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.
We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.
We believe that there are three persons in the Godhead – the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and co-equal in power and glory.
We believe that in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.
We believe that our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.
We believe that repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, are necessary to salvation.
We believe that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.
We believe that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.
We believe that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We believe in the immortality of the soul; in the resurrection of the body; in the general judgment at the end of the world; in the eternal happiness of the righteous; and in the endless punishment of the wicked.
OUR VALUES – that which really matters to us
Our identity, vision and God-given mission as disciples of Jesus Christ are shaped by the values of the Kingdom of God as we love God and love others, reaching for fullness of life for all with Jesus. Our values are reframed as statements of intent to assist us in how we live them out.
Boldness
We will courageously and confidently seek to fulfil our five mission priorities: share the good news, seek justice and reconciliation, nurture disciples of Jesus, serve others without discrimination, care for creation;
Compassion
We will serve with the unconditional love and grace of God as the pattern for our behaviour, with a bias to the poor and marginalised;
Passion
We will bring our best selves, our God-given energies and our convictions to our work, service and learning, whether as officers, members, employees or volunteers;
Respect
We will welcome each person with the dignity of those created in the image of God, valuing their diversity, seeking to serve each other’s flourishing and transformation within God’s love;
Integrity
We will be honest and transparent in all our dealings with each other and those we serve, being open about our motives and agendas;
Mutual accountability
We will willingly and freely give full account for our actions to those we interact with and expect the same in return, recognising the link between individual responsibility and mutual accountability.
The Salvation Army believes in the importance of Safeguarding, and within all our local mission expressions, there is a requirement to adhere to the policies, procedures and practices relating to how we want to be a safe place. All our team are required to undergo Safeguarding awareness.
Our Presence in Notting Hill
Present in Notting Hill from 1878, and situated on Portobello Road since 1924, the Salvation Army had discerned the need to show God’s love to the community of Notting Hill.
Notting Hill Corps opened as a Christian Mission station in 1878. As announced in the 1978 July edition of the ‘Christian Mission Magazine’.
OPENING OF A STATION AT NOTTING-HILL.
WITH the Victoria Hall, or Bijou Theatre, for Sundays, and two smaller places kindly lent us for weeknights, we have made a commencement, and after about a fortnight's work, heard of a real Mission Society over twenty strong, and of open-air an indoor service·, which give every promise of glorious doings ere long. Whereof more next month.

Notting Hill Corps moved into our current church on Portobello Road in 1924 - the grand opening event was attended by British Commissioner Florence Booth who led a stone-laying ceremony.
Today, we continue to be deeply involved in sharing life with people and being part of the Notting Hill community.
We are at the heart of the local community, providing a warm welcome and an offer of hope to everyone. Many of our programmes are run by volunteers, and whatever your skills or passions are we can find a role for you!
There are opportunities to serve in our Sanctuary Project - Tuesday Cafe, Wednesday Lunch Club, Friday Cafe, Community Wardrobe, Community Garden.
Please make contact with us for further information.
We welcome people asking about using our building. Any hire that we accept must be in line with our values and mission. A hall hire license is required and we need to be aware of safeguarding policies.

There is a special place for everyone at the special events that are held at The Salvation Army in Notting Hill
Things are always changing, but here are some pictures of what you will find when you come to the Sanctuary.
Christmas 2025 was a special time, as we celebrated through community meals, carol services, carolling, Christmas sales and of course our Christmas Gift Hub. We were able to support over 500 people, and that is thanks to the many people who helped and supported. We could not have done this without the many individuals, families, schools, organisations, businesses and more! And of course the team here at The Salvation Army were fantastic, and gave so many hours to ensure we were able to make Christmas the best it could be and should be. But with Christmas over, we are not packing away what we do until next Christmas. We continue to commit to serving and supporting this community.
