Winton Salvation Army invites community to “Travel the World” this summer

This August, the Winton Salvation Army is transforming its community centre into a global destination, inviting local residents to "Travel the World" through a series of vibrant, family-friendly events. The programme, which includes Spanish tapas and salsa dancing, an Italian pizza-making class, an American BBQ, and a global quiz, is part of a wider effort to combat summer isolation and provide much-needed support for families.

The summer holidays can be a challenging time for many, often bringing increased financial pressure and social isolation. In response, the Winton Salvation Army, located at 1 Latimer Road, is opening its doors to offer a space for connection, fun, and a warm meal. The initiative is driven by a mission to foster a sense of belonging and ensure that no one in the community feels alone.

We want to offer something to our local community that enhances all aspects of life. Many people need a safe, friendly place to be where they know they will find friendship. Winton Salvation Army aims to be the place for everyone to come and feel like they belong,

This year's “Travel the World” theme features a line-up of exciting weekly events, with affordable meals and activities for all ages:

*   5th August: Experience SPAIN in Winton |  Enjoy Spanish music and tapas food from 3pm-6pm in the café, followed by a Salsa Class and Dancing for all from 5pm-6pm.

*   12th August: Experience ITALY in Winton | Italian food will be served from 3pm-6pm, with a special Pizza Making class from 5pm-6pm (booking required via reception). Visitors can also learn Italian and gather quiz answers.

*   19th August: Experience the USA in Winton |  An American BBQ will be served from 3pm-6pm, followed by a Youth Games Challenge for 11-17-year-olds from 6pm-7.30pm.

*   26th August: The World Unites in Winton

    The series culminates with assorted world food from 3pm-6pm and a World Quiz from 6pm-7.30pm, featuring a world music round with prizes to be won. Prizes for the quiz and events include high street vouchers.

The events are designed to combat loneliness and create lasting memories for Winton’s older residents. Last year participants enjoyed pebble art, glass painting, flower arranging, stamping, cards, tea bag folding , diamond art, and decoupage.

The celebrations will continue into September with a special “Come to the Table” event on 2nd September. This gathering, themed around 'New Beginnings', will feature café food from 3pm-6pm, a free School Uniform Shop opening at 4.30pm, and live music leading into an informal worship service from 6pm-7pm. The event is open to everyone.

The summer programme builds on the Winton Salvation Army's year-round commitment to the community, which includes providing hot meals, emergency food parcels, and support for the people who are homeless. The centre’s work is supported by a dedicated team of over 100 volunteers who form the “foundation” of its service to the community.
