Suffolk man takes on coastal challenge for The Salvation Army

This summer, a man from Suffolk is taking on the challenge of a lifetime and walking the entire South West Coast to raise funds for local projects run by The Salvation Amy in Beccles and Lowestoft.
The 630-mile route, widely regarded as one of the UKs toughest long-distance hikes, will see Michael Driscoll walk every metre of coastline from Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour near Bournemouth. The journey will take approximately ten weeks starting in May and finishing at the end of July.
Michael said he decided to raise money for The Salvation Army for a number of reasons including a recent trip to the church in Beccles.
He said: “I saw people eating together in a warm and sociable environment. I was really impressed to learn that they offer subsidised meals to anyone who needs it, whether that’s people experiencing homelessness, those on low incomes, or older members of the community. The Salvation Army does so much more to support vulnerable adults and children locally.
“I attended The Salvation Army in London twice in 2005 and 2006 to overcome my alcohol addiction. Whilst I did not manage to stay sober after the treatment, I am grateful to the staff who took me to my first every recovery meeting held in another Salvation Army building and suggested I needed long-term rehabilitation treatment. I’m now 19 years sober. My partner’s grandparents Mary and William Helm were trusted servants of The Salvation Army and travelled all over the UK on a mission to help others throughout their lives.”
Michael already attends the gym regularly and to prepare for the epic challenge, he has increased his training with regular running, weight sessions, and endurance work on the stepper machine. He has also completed long distance walks to build stamina.
He has set an initial fundraising target of £630 - £1 for every mile walked- but hopes to raise much more.
Michael said: “I would be grateful to anyone who would like to sponsor me. Every contribution will make a difference.”
