Style, community and sustainability at Salvation Army Oldbury Fashion Show

published on 18 Jun 2026

There was an unmistakable buzz in the hall as women from across Oldbury gathered for an evening where fashion met purpose, proving that style is about far more than what we wear.

Hosted by The Salvation Army in Oldbury in partnership with Wear Change UK, the Fashion Show transformed Merton Close into a vibrant celebration of sustainable fashion, community spirit and conscious consumerism. What began as an idea to bring people together blossomed into a memorable evening that attracted close to 100 attendees and raised approximately £450 for a major community transformation project.

From the moment guests arrived, there was a sense that this was no ordinary fashion event. The runway spotlighted the beauty, creativity and value of pre-loved fashion. Carefully curated outfits demonstrated how second-hand clothing can be stylish, affordable and environmentally responsible, challenging perceptions while inspiring fresh thinking about fashion choices.

The runway itself became a celebration of individuality and confidence. Models showcased a collection of eye-catching looks, proving that great style does not depend on a designer label or a hefty price tag. Every outfit told a story of renewal, demonstrating how clothing can be given a second life while helping to reduce waste and support charitable causes.

"We wanted to create something that was fun, welcoming and inspiring, while also encouraging people to think differently about fashion and sustainability. Seeing so many people enjoying themselves, staying afterwards to chat and support the clothing sales, was wonderful. It showed that people are looking for opportunities to connect with one another and be part of something positive."

The fashion show formed part of local Green Week activities and encouraged attendees to consider the environmental impact of their shopping habits. Through the partnership with Wear Change UK, guests discovered how choosing pre-loved clothing can help reduce waste, save money and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Importantly, every ticket purchased and every item sold helped support an ambitious local vision. Funds raised from the evening will contribute towards transforming two acres of underused land at The Salvation Army's Merton Close site into a vibrant community space featuring orchards, community gardens, a sensory prayer garden and sports facilities.

The project aims to create a lasting legacy for local residents, providing opportunities for learning, wellbeing, recreation and community connection for generations to come.

The Salvation Army in Oldbury offers a variety of community activities throughout the week, providing a safe, welcoming space for families, young people, and individuals of all ages. For more information on activities from The Salvation Army in Oldbury, follow on Facebook
