Salvation Army lunch club searching for new members

published on 5 Mar 2026

The Salvation Army in Tunbridge Wells is encouraging local residents to join its friendly and much-loved Lunch Club — a place where good food and good company go hand in hand.

The club, which runs at the church on Bayhall Road on Wednesdays and Thursdays, offers freshly prepared meals in a warm and welcoming setting, providing an important opportunity for people — particularly older residents or those living alone — to enjoy conversation, companionship and a sense of belonging. For many, it’s a highlight of the week.

Major Geoff and Major Liz Chape lead The Salvation Army in Tunbridge Wells and said the club has an important role to play in encouraging new friendships to be formed and making sure people are not alone.

Geoff said: The Lunch Club is about far more than just a meal. It’s about friendship, laughter and making sure people know they are valued members of our community.”

Salvation Army lunch clubs help create new friendships and reduce isolation through healthy and hearty meals in a safe and caring environment

Liz said: We know that loneliness can affect people at any stage of life. Our doors are open to anyone who would appreciate a warm welcome, a hearty lunch and the chance to connect with others.”

Sheila started coming to the lunch club after her husband died.

She said: “In Tunbridge Wells, there isn’t anything for people like us except these meals and coming to the second-hand sale on Thursdays before. I like to get out and about and coming here is absolutely marvellous. I’ve made some lovely friends and it’s nice to sit down to a proper meal with good company. It really does brighten my week.”

Volunteers work hard to create a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere, where everyone is greeted with kindness and made to feel at home. But the team says there is always room at the table for more.

Geoff added: If you’ve been thinking about coming along, we would love to see you. You don’t need to know anyone beforehand — just come as you are.”

Community spaces like this play a vital role in bringing people together, and the Salvation Army hopes more residents will take advantage of what the Lunch Club has to offer.

The Salvation Army in Tunbridge Wells runs a variety of other community activities throughout the week including Knit N Natter on Tuesday, a craft and coffee morning on Wednesdays and a parent and toddler group on a Friday.
