published on 10 Sep 2025

For anyone who has ever felt the weight of loneliness or longed for a friendly chat on a walk, a new initiative in Swindon offers a simple, welcoming solution. The Salvation Army at Swindon Citadel is launching a monthly ‘Well-being Walk & Chat’, creating a gentle, inclusive space for connection and companionship.

The walks, led by church leader Sharon Robinson, will commence on Thursday, 11th September 2025, and continue on the first Thursday of each month thereafter. The group will meet at the Salvation Army Hall on Devizes Road for a gentle stroll around a local park, designed to be accessible for all, including wheelchair users and dog owners. The walk starts at 10.30 am will conclude at a café to help support local trade, where conversations can continue over coffee and cake. All are welcome!

Sharon said, “In today’s world, loneliness can be overwhelming, and we know that something as simple as a walk and a chat can make a world of difference. Also, there are many people suffering from poor mental health; people who are lonely and need friendship. This isn’t about a strenuous hike; it’s about creating a safe, welcoming space where people can find companionship, enjoy the fresh air, and know that they are not alone. We believe that building community one step at a time can help lighten loads and share joys.”

Sharon says, "no one should struggle alone."

The initiative directly tackles isolation by providing a regular, low-pressure social event that combines the mental health benefits of gentle exercise, fresh air, and community connection in a beautiful outdoor setting.

The Salvation Army at Swindon Citadel serves its community through compassionate, practical support that addresses both immediate needs and long-term well-being. It operates a welcoming community centre offering essential services like a food shed, a parent and toddler group, school holiday breakfast clubs, ensuring no one faces hardship alone. Through faith-based initiatives, the corps provides a vital lifeline for those experiencing poverty, isolation, or crisis, faithfully embodying its mission to offer help and hope to all in Swindon.

The church and charity also provides counselling services and hosts 'Singing by Heart'—a dementia-friendly singing group that brings joy and connection to those affected by memory loss.
