Salvation Army helps Cardiff stay cool in the heatwave

People in Cardiff were given a helping hand to stay cool in the heatwave last month after The Salvation Army set it up its emergency support vehicle in the city centre.

Church leaders and volunteers were on hand to give out bottles of cold water throughout the hottest part of the day, and also provided an area of shade where people could sit and rest while drinking the water. They distributed more than 500 bottles of water in one day.

Salvation Army outreach workers and ambulance teams were also able to access the supply of water to help them support the people who needed assistance.

The vehicle was positioned on the junction of Queen Street and Churchill Way from 10am to 4pm.

Major Neville Andrews, emergency response coordinator for South and Mid Wales, and Major David Woodman from The Salvation Army’s Cardiff Canton Church, were also on hand.

Major Andrews said everyone involved was pleased to be able to help.

He said: “It also gave us a chance to talk to people about  the important ministries of The Salvation Army, including our work at emergency Incidents, including supporting emergency crews and volunteers attending a multi-agency exercise at the end of June.”
