Monkwearmouth capital trip creates memories for Ukrainian children

Ukrainian children who have been supported by The Salvation Army in Sunderland got to visit London Zoo as part of a special trip which they say they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Sunderland Monkwearmouth Salvation Army, which is led by Majors David and Elizabeth McCaw-Aldworth, has a large Ukrainian refugee community, who have been helped since they came to the UK in 2022 when the war broke out.

Many now volunteer and work at the church and charity in Roker Avenue, and regularly host fundraisers to support projects in Ukraine and for The Salvation Army.

The trip to London, which was a first for many of the 60 guests, included a visit to the zoo and the chance to see a show.

Olena Myronova, who came to the UK in 2022 and now works as a Refugee Support Co-ordinator and Translator, based at Monkwearmouth Salvation Army, said: “Recently, our Ukrainian community from Sunderland and the North East had the wonderful opportunity to travel together to London for a memorable and emotional trip that brought joy to many families.

“Around 60 people joined the coach journey, including mostly single mothers with children, elderly people, and families with low incomes. For many participants, this was their very first visit to the capital.”

The trip was partially funded by Monkwearmouth Salvation Army with guests staying at William Booth College in Denmark Hill, part of The Salvation Army’s headquarters.

Olena continued: “We are truly grateful for the warm welcome, hospitality, and care we received there.

“Another wonderful gift from the Salvation Army was free tickets to London Zoo, which became one of the highlights of the trip, especially for the children. The children also got to see The Lion King musical with others attending The Phantom of the Opera. We also enjoyed exploring the beautiful city, spending time together, and creating unforgettable memories.

“The feedback from the Ukrainian community was absolutely incredible. We received many heartfelt messages of gratitude and appreciation for the organisation and support. Many people said they would remember this trip for the rest of their lives. Seeing the happiness in the eyes of children, mothers, and elderly people reminded us how important such moments truly are.

“This journey gave our community not only unforgettable experiences, but also a small piece of happiness, hope, and unity. We are sincerely thankful to everyone who made it possible.”

As we mark Refugee Week, which runs from 15 to 21 June, Major David said: “We were delighted that as a church community we could help provide this opportunity for our friends to have a real London experience with a show and trip to the zoo. It’s so important to be able to provide opportunities for fun and relaxation, especially for the children, who are still living with the impact of the war.”

Members of the Ukrainian community continue to be supported by Monkwearmouth Salvation Army and share that support with the wider Ukrainian community. This includes helping people find work via the Employment Plus service, offering practical assistance such as food and clothing, providing a listening ear and spiritual support and activities for children including the opportunity to go on summer camps with The Salvation Army.
