Free community meal in Allenton combats loneliness and the rising cost of living

published on 9 Jul 2026

As food prices continue to put pressure on household budgets, The Salvation Army in Derby South is providing more than just a meal. It is serving hope, friendship, and a place where everyone can belong.

On the last Thursday of every month starting at 6pm, the church opens its doors for its End of Month Meal, a free community meal at The Salvation Army Derby South, 24 Chellaston Road, Allenton, Derby, DE24 9AE. Open to everyone, the initiative has become a lifeline for local residents seeking companionship as well as practical support during the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Guests are welcomed to enjoy a freshly prepared two-course meal in a warm and friendly environment where conversations are shared as freely as the food. For many who attend, it has become an important opportunity to connect with others, reducing isolation while easing the financial pressures of rising food prices.

The monthly meal is the vision of church leader Dawn Garwood, who made it her priority four years ago to attend to the needs of the local community. By listening to residents, building relationships and working alongside a dedicated team of volunteers, she has helped create an initiative that responds directly to the challenges many families and individuals are facing.

When you spend time listening to people, you quickly discover that many are carrying burdens that aren't always visible. Some are struggling with the rising cost of food, while others simply long for someone to sit with and share a meal. We wanted to create a place where everyone feels valued, welcomed and cared for.

She added: "This isn't just about serving food. It's about building relationships, restoring dignity and reminding people they don't have to face life's challenges alone. Our wonderful volunteers put so much love into preparing each meal, and together we're creating a community where everyone has a seat at the table."

Andrea, one of the attendees, said: "Food shopping has become so expensive that before the end of the month I often find myself worrying about how I'll manage. Coming here means I know I'll have a proper meal, but it's the company that means just as much. I've made friends here, and I also volunteer here."

Friends and regular guests, Eileen and Pat added:

"Being retired and lonely can be incredibly daunting. We look forward to coming here for the weekly Coffee Cafe and the monthly meal. This place give us the opportunity to meet with people, share information and how-tos; we play boardgames of all sorts, and also volunteer for the church. Instead of eating alone at home, we come here, enjoy good food, and spend time with people who genuinely care. It has helped us deal with isolation and loneliness."

Derby South Salvation Army is a welcoming church and community hub offering practical support, spiritual care, and a friendly space for people of all ages. Aside from its End of Month free meal, it holds other weekly events like the Sallies Tots for parent/carer and toddler and Wednesday Coffee, Cake and Chat through which it provides connection, hope, and help to the local community, reflecting a strong commitment to service, fellowship, and faith.
