Echoes of Courage: Salvation Army hosts historic Battle of Britain talk in Exmouth

published on 7 Apr 2025

For 85 years, the bravery of the Few—the pilots who defended Britain’s skies in 1940—has been etched into national memory. Now, their stories will come alive once more in an extraordinary evening of history, remembrance, and community spirit, hosted by The Salvation Army in Exmouth.

On 8 April at 7pm, the Salvation Army Hall on Sheppards Row will transform into a hub of living history as part of a special event organised with Exmouth Museum and Heritage Centre and the Battle of Britain Project. Renowned historians and model-makers Chris Wiseman, Jerry Bird, and Domonic Pound will take the audience on a journey through the South West’s wartime legacy, spotlighting the critical role of RAF Exeter (later Clyst Honiton) and the valiant squadrons—213, 87, and 601—that called it home.

A poignant highlight will be an audio recording of a son interviewing his father, an eyewitness to a German plane circling and strafing Exmouth with machine-gun fire—a visceral reminder of how global conflict touched even this coastal town.

Andrew Cutler, Community Mission Manager for Exmouth Salvation Army, reflected on the significance of hosting the event: “We’re humbled to play a part in preserving this chapter of our nation’s story. The Salvation Army has stood alongside communities through every era—wartime hardship, social change, and now, in honouring the past. This event isn’t just about history; it’s a testament to how service, unity, and remembrance continue to bind us together.”

The Salvation Army provided morale and practical support to civilians and troops during WWII, including mobile canteens and emergency relief.

Following the talk, guests can explore Exmouth Museum’s WWII displays and the evolving Battle of Britain model project, while a season-long exhibition of model planes will debut in the Cottage Gallery to mark the 85th anniversary.
