Community, connection and competition at Harnall Lifehouse sports day

published on 22 May 2026

Laughter, encouragement and a strong sense of togetherness filled the day last week as residents and staff at The Salvation Army’s Harnall Lifehouse came together for a vibrant Sports Day, held as part of a wider programme of activities marking Mental Health Awareness Week.

Harnall Lifehouse in Coventry offers supported accommodation to people experiencing homelessness, helping residents move towards independent living.

The event brought energy and excitement to the heart of the community, with residents stepping outside their daily routines to take part in a range of light-hearted and inclusive activities. From the classic egg and spoon race to inflatable darts, ring toss and beanbag challenges, the day was packed with moments of fun, friendly competition, and shared achievement. The grand finale saw participants rally together for a spirited tug of war, drawing cheers and laughter from everyone present.

The Sport Day formed a key highlight of a full week of wellbeing-focused events designed by the Salvation Army team to support positive mental health, encourage connection, and create opportunities for residents to build confidence and resilience. Throughout the week, activities including arts and crafts, cooking sessions, skill-building workshops, quizzes and relaxation exercises provided meaningful ways for individuals to engage, reflect and recharge.

The day concluded with a relaxed barbecue, where residents and staff gathered to share food, stories, and encouragement. The meal, supported by partners from Warwick University, reflected a valued relationship, with the university offering catering as a gesture of appreciation for the Lifehouse’s role as a community hub.

The atmosphere was incredible – it made me realise that my mates and I are making progress. We are doing this together. We laughed, competed, and cheered each other on. Events like these give us all a sense of pride and belonging, that we’re not alone in this journey.

Events like Sports Day highlight the importance of creating spaces where people feel seen, supported, and able to reconnect with others. By weaving fun and wellbeing together, the week served as a powerful reminder that small moments of joy and shared experience can have a lasting impact.

This week was far more than the planned activities, it was about people reconnecting with themselves and each other. Seeing residents laugh, take part, and support one another during Sports Day was genuinely uplifting. Moments like this build confidence, strengthen relationships and remind everyone that they are part of a community that cares.
