Barrow-in-Furness Summer holiday club provides support to families
published on 7 Aug 2025
The Salvation Army in Barrow-in-Furness will be providing a summer club - giving welcome relief to families struggling with the high costs of living during the school holidays.
Taking place between 10am and 1pm from Tuesday 19 August to Friday 22 August at the church and community centre on Abbey Road, The Salvation Army will be providing activities and a two-course nutritious meal to everyone that attends.
At an affordable price of just £1 per adult and 50p per child, the summer club comes at a time when families might struggle financially once the safety net of free school meals and activities comes to an end.
Captain Sarah Griffiths, church leader of The Salvation Army in Barrow-in-Furness said: “We know that for some families the school summer holidays can be such a long period of time to find affordable activities for the whole family to be involved in as well as having to stretch budgets to cover extra food.
“The Salvation Army offers a vital social lifeline and gives access to a safe space in a supportive environment. Our Summer Family Club offers a time to be together, enjoy a hearty meal and eases the financial burden that comes with the six week holiday.
"We’re passionate about being there when families need us the most. We know how much of a lifeline schools can be and when that lifeline comes to an end, many families that just about manage to get by each week, start to only just survive.”
Each day will have activities based around a different theme from ‘Day at the Seaside’ to ‘Science Day’ and ‘Sports Day’ with a different meal available.
Captain Sarah added: “The Salvation Army has always been at the heart of communities, and we want our local community to know that we are here to help them - whether that is supporting families, offering friendships to isolated individuals or building new relationships. As the cost-of-living remains high, we anticipate being busy across all areas of our work as more people are finding themselves pushed into poverty.”
Advanced booking for each session is essential and can be made by calling 01229 433 550 or emailing barrow.in.furness@salvationarmy.org.uk. Sessions can be booked on a day-by-day basis or people are welcome to book onto all, subject to availability.
