Here's all the information you need to navigate Christmas with The Salvation Army in Maidenhead this year
Christmas Present Appeal 2024
If you wish to donate to The Salvation Army's Christmas Present Appeal, the Appeal is open in Maidenhead from Tuesday 12 November until Friday 13 December 2024. We are unable to accept donations after this date as we need time to distribute the presents. Our hall (address below) will be open from 9:30am to 12:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays to accept donations.
We are collecting new unwrapped toys and gifts for children who might not otherwise receive a Christmas present. The gifts will then be wrapped and distributed to those in need. We believe every child deserves a new gift at Christmas so we are unable to take used or second hand items for the Christmas Present Appeal. Here are some suggestions of gifts to donate:
0-3 years: dolls, teddy bears, cot mobiles, baby clothes, bath toys, CDs of suitable music and nursery rhymes, puzzles
3-5: dolls and action figures, cars, lorries, DVDs and CDs (music and nursery rhymes), colouring sets, pencils, crayons, books, puzzles
5-9: educational games & toys, stationery (colouring sets, pencils, crayons, school sets), CDs & family friendly DVDs, books, puzzles, wordsearch, crosswords
9-12: games and toys, stationery, CDs, DVDs, books, T-Shirts, hair accessories, gloves, scarves, hats
13-16: CDs, DVDs, books, make-up and toiletries (please try to ensure non-allergic ingredients if possible), gloves, scarves, hats, T-Shirts, hair accessories
Over the years, millions of children and young people have benefitted from gifts donated to The Salvation Army. By giving a gift to our Christmas Present Appeal you can make a real difference in someone’s life at Christmas. Thank you for thinking of us and those we help, especially at this time of year.
Making a Monetary Donation to Maidenhead Salvation Army
If you would rather make a monetary donation, then please send a cheque made payable to “The Salvation Army” to the address below (please do not send cash) or donate online at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/thesalvationarmychristmas-2024-28

Light Up a Life Remembrance Carol Service
Join us in The Hub, on Sunday 1 December 2024 at 5:00pm, where we will be holding a Light Up a Life Christmas Remembrance Service. The service will last about 45 minutes and will be followed by tea/coffee and mince pies. We are planning to hold it in the Hub (moving into the Hall if numbers are too great). The Christmas Tree in the Hub will become a Light Up a Life tree. You, your friends and family, anyone connected to the corps (online, for example) and anyone else who comes into the Hall whilst the book is open will be welcome to write anyone they want to remember over Christmas (no matter how long ago they passed away) in a book on Reception in the weeks before the service. These names will then be transferred on to stars that will be hung on the tree in the Hub and read out during the service just after the lights on the tree are switched on. A donation of £5 is requested from those wanting to remember. This will go to corps funds or to a charity of our choice (to be discussed and publicised when the book is opened).
Registration forms are now available on Reception.
Christmas 2024 at Maidenhead Citadel
The banners are up, and the posters are ready with all the details of our Christmas Worship through December. This is an ideal time of the year to invite your friends, family, neighbours, work colleagues, and social contacts to join us to celebrate Living the Whole Christmas Story. If we want this corps to grow, then we need to take this opportunity! There are A4 posters on Reception for you to take and distribute to anyone or anywhere to inform people of what is happening. Please use them!
Christmas and New Year Arrangements
Churches Together in Maidenhead are seeking to reach over 750 families and individuals facing challenging circumstances with shared gifts of love and kindness. They are looking to give out 800 bags, which will need packing and distributing. If you are willing to help, please contact David (07544 851228) or our Love Christmas co-ordinator, Sarah France (07969 164006).
The last Songster Practice of the year will be on Thursday 28 November. The last Band Practice of the year will be on Thursday 5 December. Both sections will recommence rehearsals on Thursday 9 January 2025.
Our Hub Community Cafe will close for the Christmas and New Year period at 12:30pm on Thursday 19 December 2024 and reopen at 9:30am on Tuesday 7 January 2025.
There is no Pop-Up Charity Shop or Coffee Morning on Friday 27 December 2024. They will be open as usual on Friday 31 January 2025.
Carolling Collectors
The sheets are now up in the Lobby for people to please sign up for our carolling sessions in Maidenhead (30 November), Bracknell (7 & 21 December), Marlow (14 December), and Paddington Station (18 December). You don’t have to be a uniformed Salvationist, as we have volunteer badges. And if you find it difficult to stand for 1¼ hours, then we can provide a chair. Please do all you can to support this important way of raising money for the corps and our community work.
Advent and Christmas Devotionals
As you may have seen, this year’s theme for Advent and Christmas is Living the Whole Christmas Story. To support our thinking around this, our Battle Drill Devotionals will take us through the whole Christmas story over 35 days from Sunday 1 December. If you have never used a devotional before, or if you are looking for a different devotional to cover Advent and Christmas, and you have not yet explored Battle Drill, then make the decision to join this journey today. There's a new devotional seven days a week. You can pick a copy of the week’s devotionals from Reception. Or you can click on the link - https://linktr.ee/battlefieldpodcasts - to listen, watch or subscribe to the podcast. You can even listen to it three times a day on Salvationist Radio!
Street Angels
Maidenhead Street Angels have lost several volunteers in the past months and it is getting difficult to allow a team on to the streets on a weekend night as a result.
Street Angels go out from 9:45pm until midnight or 1am (depending on how busy the town is) and volunteers are normally asked to go out once a month. Training, DBS checks, and a warm jacket are all provided.
If you would be interested in finding out about this valuable ministry which is a wonderful way of sharing God's love in a practical way then please contact Jeanette Lock at stangelsm@hotmail.co.uk and let Captain Rob know.
Maidenhead Care
Maidenhead Care is a local charity providing Good Neighbour help and practical support for the elderly, unwell, or disadvantaged.
Volunteers of all ages can be put to work, and you can volunteer regularly, occasionally, or in blocks of time (e.g. school term times). Mileage can be claimed for trips undertaken if necessary.
You could be a duty officer, receiving telephone requests from clients in your own home (on the charity's equipment) and matching them to volunteers. You could be a volunteer driver, ferrying clients to hospital, GP, or similar appointments. You could be someone who visits and chats with some of the lonely clients on a regular basis.
If you are interested, please telephone 07538 418448, between 9-5 on a weekday, and again, let Captain Rob know.

You can watch the concert from 6pm on Sunday 8 December via our YouTube channel or tune into BBC Radio 4 from 7am on Christmas morning to listen to the highlights.
Christmas Cards to Corps Folk
For those wanting to send a card to the Corps, rather than individual cards, this will be made available from next Sunday, in The Hub. As in previous years, please make any donations to support our Corps funds, to our Corps Treasurer, John Renouf. A list of those sending seasons greetings will be included in Koinonia, during December.

Children & Youth Conference: Grow.
Friday 21 March 2025 – Sunday 23 March 2025
The Slate Conference Centre. The University of Warwick, West Midlands CV4 7SH.
A weekend to explore how we can hold and grow the potential of our children and young people. ‘Every acorn has the potential to become a mighty oak tree.’
Each child and young person hold within them an innate, God-given potential for a life that is enduring, resilient, fruitful and beautiful. This weekend, we’ll lean into our calling – to hold the potential of every child and young person – and learn how we create environments that nurture, feed and allow growth into beauty, strength and flourishing in being rooted and grounded in love (see Ephesians 3:17).

Breaking Barriers, Finding Grace, and Living a Worshipful Life
Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman offers insights to help us live out our faith daily. Her story can help us to break down barriers, let go of shame, find true satisfaction, live a worship-centred life, and boldly share our faith.
Takeaways:
- Jesus crossed cultural divides encouraging us to reach out to those society may overlook.
- Jesus’ interaction with the Samaritan woman reminds us God’s grace covers our past, freeing us from guilt.
- Jesus’ “living water” provides lasting fulfilment, unlike the fleeting pleasures of this world.
- Jesus empowers us to navigate life’s hardships with his strength and peace.
- Worship extends beyond Sunday meetings, inviting us to honour God in every moment and task.
- Knowing Jesus sees and loves us fully allows us to live authentically and embrace his grace.
- Like the Samaritan woman, we are called to share our stories and extend Jesus’ love to others.
As we reflect on this story, let’s grow together in discipleship, living as true reflections of Christ’s love and grace!

Territorial Prayer Network - Points for prayer from Prayer Matters.
SUNDAY 1 December: SABBATH PRAYER
The Dawning of the Light
Today we pray over our world, the darkness of war, sickness and poverty. As with the darkness that covered the earth in Genesis, we know that the Spirit of God is hovering over our world. Nothing is outside of his control. Everything must submit to his authority. His light has and will overcome the darkness. As we journey through Advent, may we bear witness to the light, may we belong to the light and may we radiate the light through our lives. (Taken from Sermon Starter 1 in the ‘Everlasting Light’ Advent Resources)
MONDAY 2 December: SHARING THE GOOD NEWS
‘Be a Star’ Campaign
The Salvation Army’s Fundraising team is inviting people to ‘be a Sally Army Star’ this Christmas, raising money through Star Trees, festive coffee mornings, sponsored runs, crafting, festive e-cards and sponsored office Christmas outfit days. Let’s pray that lots of individuals, businesses and organisations download the fundraising pack and do something to raise money to support Salvation Army social work this Christmas, and let’s pray that they encounter the life-changing presence of God as they fundraise. (Lyndall Bywater, UKI Boiler Room Team)
TUESDAY 3 December: SERVING AND CARING
Territorial Carol Service – 3 December
Dear Heavenly Father, we pray for the Territorial Carol Service this evening at the Royal Albert Hall. As we celebrate your birth this Christmas, we pray you will birth in us – and all those attending the carol service – a deeper sense of longing for your presence as Christ, the Messiah, the King of kings, and a deeper understanding of the meaning of ‘Everlasting Light’. (Colonel Peter Forrest, Chief Secretary)
WEDNESDAY 4 December: GROWING IN FAITH
Core Recovery at Christmas
Father God, we pray for those in recovery who find that Christmas stirs feelings of loneliness and sadness because of broken friendships and family relationships. We realise too that Christmas parties are places where alcohol is often served, and we pray that hosts of gatherings will be sensitive to the needs of others, especially those who are in recovery from alcohol abuse. We pray that those in recovery will seek support when temptations are strong. (Major Jill Miller, Core Recovery Team)
THURSDAY 5 December: INTERNATIONAL SALVATION ARMY
South America West Territory
The territory comprises Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru, and the leadership team is Colonels Alex and Luz Nesterenko and Lieut-Colonels Raul and Lidia Bernao. We pray God’s blessing on the Army’s work in these nations, particularly as Salvationists share the good news of Christmas in word and deed in their local communities.
(Lyndall Bywater, UKI Boiler Room Team)
FRIDAY 6 December: JUSTICE AND RECONCILIATION
Salvation Army Drop-In Centres
Dear Lord, we pray for the many people who find refuge, safety, warmth and unconditional love when attending our drop-in centres. We pray that every service user will benefit from the care, support and practical assistance offered, and that individuals will not only see but also experience something of the love of Jesus.
(Mitch Menagh, Assistant Secretary for Mission)
SATURDAY 7 December: CARE FOR CREATION
Enjoying Creation – Feeding the Birds
At a time of year when it can be hard to find signs of life, Jesus invites us to consider the birds (Luke 12:24) and to remind ourselves that it is God who provides for us. You could make a simple bird feeder: roll a pinecone in lard and birdseed, tie on some string and hang it in your garden to encourage wildlife to come, and so be part of God’s provision for them. As you enjoy the beauty of nature, trust God to meet your needs too. (Captain Vanessa Coleman, Woking Corps)

In terms of community work, we have a Community Lunch that provides hot takeaway meals to the homeless and those in need that requires volunteers on Sundays (after our church worship meeting) from around 12 noon to 1:30pm.
We also run a Hub Community Cafe (open to the public) and Community Kitchen (providing hot takeaway meals to the homeless and those in need) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with volunteers working from around 9:15am to 12:45pm.
If you are interested in either of these opportunities, then please email us at maidenhead@salvationarmy.org.uk, and if we have any current vacancies we'll arrange a time for you to come in and have a chat with me.
We value diversity and encourage volunteers of all ages and abilities from all sections of the community. However, we can only accept applications from prospective volunteers who live in the UK and Ireland and have the right to work and/or volunteer in the UK and Ireland.
Unfortunately we don’t offer sponsorship for voluntary roles.
