Why We Sing
Songs of joy, hope, peace and love
Songs of joy, hope, peace and love.
Music and singing our theology has always been an integral part of The Salvation Army.
The International Staff Songsters, since our founding in 1980, has drawn on this rich heritage to reach thousands of people in the UK and around the world, presenting words and music inspired by scripture to enhance personal devotions and corporate worship.
The ISS were founded in 1980 to share the love of God far and wide and to inspire people with the ‘heart songs’ of The Salvation Army and wherever we go, through music we seek to introduce people to Jesus Christ and his power to change lives.
Each member of the group loves to express their personal Christian faith through singing and is an active member of their local Salvation Army church.
Since 2003 the Songsters have been conducted by Dorothy Nancekieviell, former head teacher at independent Methodist School, Farringtons, and a former Director of Music at Wells Cathedral School. Their repertoire incorporates a wide range of choral styles and includes music by composers from The Salvation Army and artists such as Bob Chilcott, Mark Hayes, John Rutter, and Eric Whitacre.
The ISS come together each week to rehearse near to The Salvation Army’s headquarters in central London.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic once a month, from September to June the group presented a varied weekend programme and leads Christian worship at a Salvation Army centre in the UK. Currently the choir is carefully restarting Saturday festivals. See details on our Upcoming Events page.
Profits from recordings (sold via www.sps-shop.com) and performances support the work of The Salvation Army.
