Weymouth Lights Up Jubilee Clock to Honour Salvation Army’s Vital Community Work

Weymouth is set to celebrate the Salvation Army's vital contributions to the community by lighting up its iconic Jubilee Clock in the charity’s vibrant colours—yellow, red, and blue—from Saturday 7 December to Monday 9 December. 

The Salvation Army band was set to perform at the Carols on the Coast concert on December 7, starting at 5pm at Prom Café on the Promenade close to the Jubilee Clock, but the event was cancelled following a severe weather alert.  

Earlier this year, Weymouth Town Council opened nominations for local charities to be honoured in the Jubilee Clock light-up scheme, receiving over 100 submissions from the community. The Salvation Army was among the 11 charities chosen for this prestigious recognition, underscoring the local support for its impactful work.

Major Ian R. Urmston, the Salvation Army’s Commanding Officer for Weymouth, expressed deep gratitude for the honour: "We are deeply grateful to the Weymouth Town Council for choosing The Salvation Army to illuminate the iconic Jubilee Clock. This recognition not only warms our hearts but also strengthens our resolve to serve those in need.”

The Jubilee Clock, a historical free-standing tower erected in 1888 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, is a tourist attraction that stands as a proud symbol of Weymouth's heritage. 

Cllr Jon Orrell, Mayor of Weymouth, said: “We are delighted to be shining a light on the work of The Salvation Army, the last organisation to feature in the Jubilee Clock light up scheme in 2024. The clock will be lit yellow, red, and blue to recognise the work they do to help residents from their town centre hub.”

The Weymouth Salvation Army Church is a vibrant hub that fosters a supportive environment for the community. It hosts specialised support groups like Singing for the Brain and Memory Café, dedicated to individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia, along with their caregivers. Additionally, the church serves as a social and networking space through its Parents and Toddlers support group and Thursday coffee morning meetups, bringing people together and building connections.
