Still time to donate to this year’s Big Toy Appeal

The leaders of The Salvation Army in Birkenhead are urging members of the public to support an appeal run in partnership with toy retailer The Entertainer.
Captain Sam Hamilton said The Big Toy Appeal plays a key role in helping Birkenhead Salvation Army support local children whose parents cannot afford to buy gifts.
The appeal sees the toy retailer match donations to The Salvation Army from its customers, and Sam said it will help support more people than ever before.
She said: “Our church is based in a very deprived area and Christmas can be an incredibly difficult time for many families. Some parents are caring for seriously ill children, some are refugees new to the country with little support, and others are simply overwhelmed by the rising costs of living. Every extra toy we receive makes a huge difference – it’s one more family we can help, one more child who will have something special to open on Christmas morning.”
Last year, Sam and Major Jonathan Hamilton supported more than 130 families and more than 300 children through its annual Christmas Present Appeal working with schools and social workers. Unlike traditional donation models, The Salvation Army in Birkenhead runs a toy shop allowing parents to personally choose gifts for their children.
Sam said: “In the past we would pack bag of toys based on referrals. But parents know best what their children will love. One year, a teenage boy’s parents picked out a fluffy penguin toy – something we would never have chosen for him. Seeing them select the perfect gift for their child gives them dignity, and it means so much more than just receiving a pre-packed bag.”
The Entertainer’s Big Toy Appeal runs until 29 November and Sam said she hoped members of the public would get involved.
She added: “You might think your gift is just a small gesture but to the family receiving it, it means the world. This is about sharing kindness and joy at a time when many people are struggling. Every single toy helps create a special Christmas for a child who might otherwise go without.”
