Second hand bike renewed by Salvation Army makes epic 800-mile trip

When Anthony Binns bought a second-hand bicycle from The Salvation Army’s Recycles programme in Salisbury in December 2024 for just £65, he was told it would be perfect for local rides. But Anthony had bigger plans—an 800-mile cycling adventure across France.

Since 2021, the volunteer-run Recycles programme has refurbished and sold over 1,000 bikes, funding vital community initiatives—from toddler groups to support for isolated seniors. The project also provides bikes to refugees and low-income families, proving that every donated bicycle has the potential for a remarkable journey.

On 1st May 2025, Anthony set off from Salisbury to Portsmouth, caught the ferry to St. Malo, and pedalled through varying terrains—tarmac, gravel, dirt tracks—and weather conditions, from scorching 30°C heat to thunderstorms and hail. Despite the challenges, the refurbished bike didn’t falter—no punctures, no mechanical issues, just one well-oiled chain.

On 14th May, Anthony arrived in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the Pyrenees, where he donated the bike to a grateful hostel worker before continuing his journey on foot along the Camino de Santiago.

Martin Davison, leader of The Salvation Army in Salisbury, said: “This story is a testament to the incredible work of our volunteers. To think that a bike given a second chance here in Salisbury has travelled so far and now begins another chapter in France—it’s truly heart-warming. This bike’s journey shows the power of giving old things new purpose.”

Salisbury to France

Recently, the recycles project donated two bicycles to Greentrees Primary School, a St. Mark’s Church of England Junior School in Salisbury whose sustainability efforts include encouraging students and staff to swap cars for bikes, reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly travel.

Martin said, “When we heard about the school’s carbon emission reduction push we thought why not donate something for the teachers. This partnership highlights how local organisations can work together to support environmental goals.”

The Salvation Army in Salisbury runs a variety of community programmes aimed at supporting vulnerable individuals and fostering social inclusion. Including supplying Sleeping Bags, toiletries, and fresh clothing for Homeless people. A friendship Circle group to combat loneliness, while the Parent and Toddler Group supports families with young children.
