Salvation Army launches Pop-Up Choir for Christmas Concert
published on 28 Nov 2025
The Salvation Army in Felixstowe has launched a new Pop-Up Community Choir, inviting people of all ages and abilities to come together and sing in the lead-up to Christmas. Open to anyone—whether they have singing experience or not—the choir offers a warm, accessible opportunity to take part in a joyful festive celebration.
The idea emerged from Bandmaster Simon Scott, who wanted the brass band to connect more widely with the community at Christmas.
He said: “We play lots of carols each year, but we rarely get the chance to explore other Christmas music in a concert setting. I wanted something that brought people together. My sister-in-law Emma mentioned she’d been dreaming of running a community choir, and the Pop-Up Choir grew from there.”
Choir leader Emma, who has experience running community choirs, has selected an uplifting and inclusive programme including It’s Christmas by Chris Tomlin, Stormzy’s Blinded by Your Grace, Feliz Navidad, and Lovely Day. Songs are taught by ear, meaning participants do not need to read music.
The choir meets every Sunday afternoon at 3:30pm at the Salvation Army hall on Cobbold Road, with rehearsals running until the final concert on Friday 19 December. Everyone is welcome to join at any stage— even if they can attend only one rehearsal.
The first rehearsal drew an enthusiastic response.
Simon said: “The atmosphere was warm, fun, and relaxed. A lot of people who don’t usually sing came along and loved it. One gentleman arrived planning just to listen, but soon joined in. There’s something infectious about singing together—it really does lift the soul. One particularly touching moment came when three generations of one family became involved. A young girl attended with her grandparents, and after enjoying the session so much, her mum is now considering joining too. That’s exactly what this is about. Community, connection, and joy.”
The choir forms part of the Salvation Army’s mission to be at the heart of the local community—offering connection, welcome, and belonging.

Simon said: “Commitment can be difficult in today’s world. A pop-up choir provides something meaningful without long-term pressure. If it goes well, we’d love this to become an annual event.”
Rehearsals are open to all, and anyone wanting more information can contact the Felixstowe Salvation Army through social media or by phone on 01394 276502.
