Perth women celebrate support and community at HerSpace

Women in Perth came together this week to support International Women’s Day at a weekly group run by The Salvation Army.

The evening at the charity’s HerSpace project included entertainment from local singer Ailsa Black, karaoke and food donated by Mama’s, alongside information stalls from partner organisations including IDart, Hillcrest Futures, CoDa, Sharp Dragon and A Hearty Occasion.

HerSpace was launched earlier this year to respond to mental health, isolation and wellbeing issues among women locally. The group runs every Thursday evening and offers a welcoming environment where women can talk openly, access support and build friendships.

Laura Thomson, from The Salvation Army in Perth, said the International Women’s Day celebration reflected exactly what the group is designed to offer.

Laura said: “HerSpace is about compassion, connection and hope. We want women to know they’re not alone and that there’s a place where they can come exactly as they are and be welcomed. International Women’s Day felt like the perfect moment to celebrate that community and the strength that comes from women supporting one another.

“There is a wide range of advice on offer from guidance on housing, financial advice, domestic abuse support, addiction recovery, employment and mental health services.”

HerSpace runs every Thursday from 5.30pm at Cafe 3:16, 30-36 King Edward Street in Perth city centre and is open to women aged 18 and over.
