New women’s support group launches in Perth
published on 11 Dec 2025
A new women-only support group called HerSpace has launched in Perth in direct response to growing concerns about mental health and rising suicides among women in the region.
HerSpace is co-led by Laura Thomson, who manages Skinnergate Lifehouse, The Salvation Army’s men’s homelessness centre in Perth, alongside support worker Leanne Harvey. Laura and Leanne are establishing HerSpace in The Salvation Army's nearby community church where the group meet every Thursday from 5.30pm.
HerSpace provides:
- A safe, women-only space to talk openly and without judgement.
- A supportive community to reduce isolation for women.
- Access to specialist support.
- Opportunities to thrive – women will be able to enjoy uplifting activities, learn new skills, and take part in creative, fun experiences that nurture wellbeing.
According to Scottish Government data, the suspected suicide death rate within NHS Tayside is higher than the Scottish average. Local frontline groups and charities have reported an increase in women seeking help over the past year — many of whom are experiencing trauma, isolation, overwhelming stress or poor mental health and are not always comfortable accessing mixed-gender or formal services.
Laura said: “I’ve supported people through some of the hardest moments of their lives in my work, but I’ve also felt the impact of suicide personally after losing a friend. That loss stays with you. It showed me how vital it is for women to have somewhere safe to talk before things reach crisis point.
“HerSpace is about compassion, connection and hope. We’re here to listen, support and create a sense of belonging help women feel less alone. If one life is changed because this space exists, it will have been worth it.”
Each week, HerSpace in Perth will offer practical and emotional guidance for women, covering:
- Financial and debt advice
- Domestic violence and abuse support
- Addiction recovery and advice on substance use
- Housing and homelessness prevention
- Mental-health and crisis services
- Help getting a job or accessing training
- Family and relationship support
- Bereavement and trauma services
- Fitness and nutrition
- Support relating to community violence or crime.
The initiative has been welcomed by a number of community groups who have shown a strong commitment to wellbeing in Perth.
Leanne said: “Every week, we’ll have different agencies coming in to offer advice and support but more importantly we’ll have a welcoming environment where kindness and community come first.
“We recognise that mental health doesn’t exist in a bubble. There are a range of pressures people face that can have a huge impact on wellbeing that’s why we have invited lots of other organisations.”
HerSpace is open to all women aged 18+ in Perth and the surrounding area. For more details, contact Laura on 07884 563194.
