New toddler group at Stroud Salvation Army brings hope and community to local families

In a world that often feels overwhelming, The Salvation Army in Stroud has created a warm and welcoming space where parents and toddlers can escape the pressures of daily life. The newly established Toddler Support Group offers more than just playtime—it’s a place where families find connection, support, and a sense of belonging.

For parents like Tilly, who struggled with social anxiety, the group has been transformative: "I love how welcoming everyone is. It’s helped me overcome my fear of meeting new people—I’d recommend it to anyone who needs this kind of support."

The group, which meets every Monday from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, at the Salvation Army Hall on Acre Street, is open to mums, dads, grandparents and carers.

Now in its fourth week, the group’s sessions are run by Hayley Rowley, a Ministry and Management Apprentice at The Salvation Army. Hayley brings years of experience as a qualified nursery nurse and teaching assistant, with additional training in child development and special needs.

The parents and toddler group is a safe and friendly environment for children and their caregivers to play, learn, and interact.

Hayley said, “At The Salvation Army, our mission has always been to serve our community in practical and meaningful ways—meeting people where they are and helping them grow. We heard from parents in Stroud who needed a space to connect, share their struggles and so we worked to create a space where they feel loved and supported. The idea is to ensure every child and parent feels valued with every detail of the group being shaped by the families it aims to support. For kids it could be through sensory play or quiet moments of connection for the parents.”

The sessions offer free play, sensory activities, storytelling, and shared snacks, all set to a backdrop of uplifting music. While the group is rooted in Christian values, Hayley emphasizes inclusivity:

"We’re not here to preach—just to love. Everyone’s welcome. If someone needs a listening ear or a prayer, we’re here."

The response has been overwhelming. At the first session, 11 families attended, including a dad who was instantly embraced by the group.

There are already plans to expand this programme so that it benefits the whole family. Hayley dreams of launching monthly "Dads & Tots" sessions, a homework club for older siblings, and even "Muddy Church"—an outdoor alternative to traditional Sunday services.

“It’s about meeting families where they are. If we can help just one parent feel less alone, it’s worth it."

Everyone is welcome regardless of beliefs or background, with the emphasis on fun. To join the group simply drop in or email Hayley ahead of time: Hayley.Rowley@salvationarmy.org.uk.
