Music Man project brings beat to Hexham Salvation Army

published on 20 Oct 2026

A project that provides opportunities for people with additional needs to develop their musical talent hit the right notes when it hosted a session at Hexham Salvation Army.

The Music Man Project is an award winning and fully accessible music service for adults and children with learning disabilities, providing education, enjoyment and access to performance opportunities.

It is part of a partnership with The Salvation Army’s Enabled community, which provides spiritual support and friendship to people with disabilities, their families and carers.

The Music Man team from Wakefield travelled north to host a one-off session at Hexham Salvation Army in Market Street with guests enjoying music, crafts, food and friendship.

Hexham Salvation Army leader Territorial Envoy Jason Wearmouth said: “It was such a brilliant day and there was a real buzz around the place. We already run CAMEO here at Hexham for people with disabilities and additional needs, so it was fantastic to see some familiar faces, but just as exciting to welcome people we hadn’t met before who now want to stay connected with us and with the wider Enabled community.

“One of the biggest things for us was getting to experience the Music Man Project first-hand. You could see how much confidence, enjoyment and connection it brought out in people. It’s definitely given us something to get excited about, and we’d love to explore how we could take that experience forward and potentially develop something here in Hexham on a more regular basis.”

Jo-Anne Graham, Disability Engagement Advisor at The Salvation Army, said: “We had a brilliant time at our event at Hexham. It was lovely to meet new friends and catch up with familiar faces from our Enabled family. A huge thank you to Wakefield, who were fab and a big thank you to Jason for welcoming us. It was such a great day of music, fellowship, lots of food and fun.

“Our Enabled community is about empowering, ministering to each other, spiritual and social fellowship, helping people to feel valued, recognised and celebrated for what they can do in society.”

Hexham Salvation Army hosts a number of activities throughout the week including a lunch club and come and meet each other (CAMEO) group on Tuesdays. They host a play café on a Friday and worship on a Sunday. Find more information here or search for them on Facebook.
