Hull Salvation Army to host signed festive Carol Service
published on 18 Dec 2025
A fun inclusive Christmas Carol Service which will be fully interpreted in British sign language will take place at Hull Citadel Salvation Army on Sunday (21 December).
The festive event will feature well-loved carols and performances by the brass band, choir, timbrels and special guests the Hull Visual Choir – all interpreted so that it is inclusive for people who are Deaf.
This is the second year that Hull Citadel Salvation Army has hosted an event with the Hull Visual Choir, which Hull Salvation Army leaders Captains Nick and Jane Entwisle are also members of.
Cpt Jane said: “Who doesn’t enjoy singing along with The Salvation Army band at Christmas? We’d love to help people find some joy in the busyness of Christmas. So young or young at heart, Hearing or Deaf everyone is welcome. There will be plenty of festive favourites to sing along with and music performed by our brass band, choir, timbrels and special guests from the Hull Visual Choir. We are delighted to have volunteers from Hull Deaf Centre enabling the service to be fully interpreted in BSL (British Sign Language).
“We held a similar event last year with about 20 BSL users attending. The atmosphere was amazing with both hearing and Deaf people saying what a fabulous inclusive and interactive service it was. We are delighted that Hull Visual Choir will be joining us again this year.”
Cpts Jane and Nick are both proficient in sign language and are passionate about ensuring church is an inclusive place for all.
Jane continued: “We are both members of the visual choir. Nick and I have friends who are Deaf and we are very aware of many of the challenges that the Deaf community face, not least being able to access church for celebrations such as Christmas, baby dedications, and weddings, but also for hospital visits and funerals.
“It is our hope to be able to continue to develop our BSL skills so that we can offer direct pastoral and spiritual support to the Deaf community in Hull.”
The carol service will take place on Sunday 21 December at 4pm at Hull Citadel Salvation Army, 86-92 Beverley Road, Hull. You do not need to book in advance.
The Salvation Army’s band will be out and about over the next few days playing carols in the town centre.
The church and charity has also been busy supporting families who struggle financially at this time of year through its Toy Appeal which is supporting 500 children with new gifts so that children have something to open on Christmas morning. They have also provided food hampers to families, to adults who are struggling with housing insecurity and poverty, and a festive breakfast to those who attend the regular Crafty Cuppa.
