Hull Salvation Army to host Christmas lunch and festivities

published on 15 Dec 2022

People are invited to join The Salvation Army in Hull for Christmas dinner and festivities this year.

The church and charity is offering a free meal and festive joy for people over 60 from 11.30am to 3.30pm on Christmas Day, Sunday 25 December.

There will be the chance to enjoy a two-course meal, games and gifts. There will also be an all age Christmas Day service for anyone wanting to celebrate at 10:30am.

The High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire Jacky Bowes, her husband Andrew and friends Mick and Sharon will also be volunteering in the morning.

Lt Jane Entwisle, who leads Hull Icehouse Salvation Army and will be hosting the day with her husband Lt Nick, who leads Hull Citadel Salvation Army, said: “We would love you to join us this Christmas Day for dinner and celebrations. We will have a meal, festive activities, great conversation and a warm space for people to be.

“The Christmas Story inspires us as a church to care for people who are vulnerable or in need during the festive season and throughout the year. This year we know that times are hard for people with many having to make the choice between heating and eating. The cost of living has left many afraid they won’t be able to afford the Christmas they’d like.

“We want people to know they also do not have to be alone this Christmas Day. It can be a lonely time for people, especially if they have no family or family members live far away, but we are here for you.

“Our invitation is extended to people who are over 60. If you would like to join us we still have spaces left so please do get in touch and book your place.

“We’d also like to thank Jacky Bowes her husband and friends, who are spending the morning with us preparing for our guests. We couldn’t do what we do without the support of volunteers who share their time and help us to spread some Christmas joy.”

Jacky, High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire, said: “As I head towards the end of my year as High Sheriff, I reflect on the many things that I have experienced. I have been fortunate to meet so many people across our county, who have hearts of gold and who continually give so much to so many and I have been so humbled by their kindness and generosity.

“Loneliness is sad at any time of the year but the thought of anyone being lonely on Christmas Day really does tug at my heart strings. Christmas is a time for sharing and being together, so being able to support this amazing initiative at The Salvation Army in Hull will make our Christmas Day very special and we hope that we in turn can help make it special for so many others too.”

The meal will take place at Hull Icehouse Salvation Army at 80 Adelaide Road, HU3 2EY. To book your place please phone 01482 212475, email hull.icehouse@salvationarmy.org.uk or pop into Hull Icehouse Salvation Army or Hull Citadel Salvation Army at 92 Beverley Road.
