George Steven Centre celebrates a different kind of Christmas gift

Mention gifts at Christmas and most people will instantly think about the presents that sit under the tree.

But one of our centres for adults with learning disabilities is focussing on a very different kind of gift – the kind that every person has within themselves.

Service users at the George Steven Centre in Kilbirnie took part in a special Christmas carol service to showcase their gifts and talents, and their incredible achievements over the past year - which links back to the gift of the birth of Jesus.

Men and women from the centre sung carols, read prayers and staged drama performances at our community church in Kilbirnie.

The theme of the event, which was attended by friends of the centre, was gifts at Christmas and looked at the gifts people have rather than the ones people give and receive.

Lynne Harvey, manager of the George Steven Centre, said: “We were aiming to tell the story of Christmas through the recognition that not all gifts needed to be of a physical nature.

"Jesus was the gift given to us on Christmas Day and the service users all have their own gifts which lie within them, although not always obvious to the outside eye. We wished to share the birth of Jesus whilst showcasing our individual gifts."
