Debt advice service named as finalists in local awards

A service that supports people struggling with debt and trapped in poverty has been shortlisted for an award in a ceremony that celebrates the island's best and brightest businesses, services and organisations.

The Salvation Army’s Debt Advice Service has been announced as finalists in the Isle of Man Awards for Excellence 2026 in the Freedom to Flourish category which recognises services that give people a future that they can believe in.

Being named as a finalist is such a wonderful recognition, but the real achievement is seeing people move forward once they access the service and get their lives back on track."

As costs continue to climb and more people are pushed into poverty, The Salvation Army service offers debt advice and money management solutions including budgeting tips to the hardest hit members of the Island community, taking place at The Salvation Army’s church and community centre on Isle of Man Business Park, Ballacottier Crescent.

Debbie White, area debt advice co-ordinator for The Salvation Army Isle of Man said: “Being named as a finalist is such a wonderful recognition, but the real achievement is seeing people move forward once they access the service and get their lives back on track. It’s not simply about numbers on a spreadsheet or balancing a budget. It’s about listening without judgement, understanding someone’s circumstances and helping them take practical steps towards greater financial stability.

“Our team has grown significantly since our launch in 2020 and this is something that we are fiercely proud of but it also shows the growing need for this kind of support. For someone living with the weight of debt, having a person walking alongside them can make a huge difference. It can mean moving from feeling overwhelmed and uncertain to having a plan, hope and a pathway forward and we will continue to do what is needed, for as long as is needed.”

With a judgement free approach to debt the service provides one-to-one free, confidential and impartial advice by a team of specialists for people who are worried about rising bills, stuck in arrears or struggling to meet regular monthly repayments. The team works alongside clients to look at what they owe and make a realistic plan for repaying debts and can also contact creditors on a person’s behalf and explore and negotiate available options such as repayment holidays.

One of only two organisations providing debt support on the Isle of Man with the Office of Fair Trading also offering assistance, The Salvation Army’s debt advice service is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and is available to everyone within the community and marked its fifth anniversary at the end of 2025.

For anyone seeking debt advice or anyone worried about bills that are in arrears or struggling to meet regular monthly payments, The Salvation Army can be contacted on (01624) 675702 or via email at iomdas@salvationarmy.org.uk.
