Chippenham Salvation Army toiletry appeal brings dignity to local refuge residents
published on 9 Feb 2026
Imagine arriving at a place of safety with nothing but the clothes you and your children are wearing. For individuals and families fleeing domestic violence and seeking sanctuary at Chippenham’s local Refuge, this is often the stark reality. In January, the community of Chippenham answered this urgent need with an overwhelming wave of compassion, filling The Salvation Army’s appeal with essential toiletries to offer comfort and dignity at a critical moment.
Led by Community Support Worker Miriam Dann-Gandy, The Salvation Army’s January Toiletry Appeal has gathered a significant haul of donations, all destined to create vital welcome packs for new residents at the town’s Refuge. Refuge houses women, men and children fleeing domestic violence.
Miriam says the appeal underlines a powerful community spirit and also reinforces The Salvation Army’s commitment to supporting the Refuge and other local projects, confident in the knowledge that the community stands ready to help those in need.
As the Refuge cannot publicise its location or operate public donation points for safety reasons, The Salvation Army church and community centre on Market Place acts as a vital conduit.
“We are blessed with a platform to be a voice for those seeking safety. Providing these practical items is a direct way to show kindness and support on behalf of the whole town. We often say ‘Chippenham looks after its own’, and this is proof. The generosity of local people is a constant source of inspiration to us. They step up time and again to support their neighbours.”
The Salvation Army extends particular thanks to its partners at the Chippenham Donation Centre, which acted as the main drop-off point, and to every volunteer who helped sort and organise the contributions.
The impact of these donations is profound. For Refuge staff, the welcome packs are operationally vital.
“It empowers their workers to immediately meet basic needs. For a new resident with no possessions, no finances, limited access to shops, something as simple as shampoo or a toothbrush isn’t just about hygiene—it removes a huge stress and allows for a moment of self-care.”
The Salvation Army in Chippenham operates from its centre on Market Place, running a Foodbank, community support services, and seasonal appeals alongside its church activities.
Beyond this, the Salvation Army hosts regular events such as Messy Church—a family-friendly gathering held on the 3rd Saturday of each month (except August)—featuring free crafts, activities, and a light lunch. Additionally, they run weekly initiatives like the Cameo group and luncheon club, as well as opening their hall to addiction recovery support groups, ensuring no one has to face hardship alone.
Rooted in faith but welcoming to all, the Salvation Army in Chippenham listens and strives to respond to the community’s needs—one person at a time. For more information, visit their website: Chippenham | The Salvation Army.
