Aiming to be the fastest marathon runner in cartoon costume

Where’s Wally? Can you spot the London Marathon runner raising money for The Salvation Army.
Spectators will have to keep their eyes peeled as George Anthony takes on the London Marathon in full Where’s Wally gear, turning the race into a live-action search puzzle.
As well as raising money for The Salvation Army, George is aiming to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest person dressed as a cartoon character to run a marathon.
The 25-year-old from Monmouth is targeting the current record of 2 hours 46 minutes and 40 seconds, set by Edward Ditmyer of the USA, who ran the Detroit Marathon dressed as Charlie Brown in 2011.
George explains his motivation:
“I’ve run marathons before and noticed that runners in costume often inspire people to donate. I wanted to stand out and make this challenge meaningful. Going for a world record adds a personal test for me and hopefully encourages people to support the fundraising.”
George discovered his love of running while at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School, competing in Brecon League cross‑country events. He completed the Salzburg Marathon last year in just over 2 hours 54 minutes, leaving him only eight minutes outside the record he now hopes to beat.
All funds raised will support The Salvation Army’s Young People’s Homelessness Services in Cardiff, which is a cause close to George’s heart. His mother, Sally, has worked there for 30 years, and he has seen first‑hand the impact the service has on young people experiencing homelessness.
Sally says she couldn’t be prouder:
“The money George raises will support our work with young people experiencing homelessness in Cardiff who have faced trauma and adversity. We help them rebuild confidence and move forward positively. Knowing he’s helping others will spur him on. Good luck, George.”
This year’s London Marathon takes place on Sunday 26 April, with the 26.2mile route starting in Greenwich and finishing near Buckingham Palace.
