20-Year-Old Winton local runs London Marathon to support Salvation Army community café renovation

For 20-year-old Naomi Shave, the London Marathon isn’t just a race—it’s a heartfelt mission to give back to the place that has been a cornerstone of her life. Growing up in Winton, Naomi has witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of the Winton Salvation Army, a hub of warmth, laughter, and support for the community. Now, she’s lacing up her running shoes to raise funds for the renovation of the Salvation Army’s community café, a space that has brought people together through good times and bad.

The Café, a bustling space serving over 100 people daily, has become worn and tired after years of heavy use. The furniture is gradually breaking and in urgent need of replacement, while the décor and kitchen equipment show visible signs of wear. As the community has evolved from an older generation to primarily families and students—many from nearby Bournemouth University— the Café’s look needs rejuvenation to appeal to a younger demographic. This includes introducing modern, versatile furniture that can be easily rearranged to create a multi-functional space.

At the same time, there is a desire to honour the building’s heritage; before being purchased by The Salvation Army, it was an old ice cream factory. The plan is to display historical photos of this era and even reintroduce ice cream to the menu, blending the past with a fresh, contemporary vibe.

Naomi says she would love to finish the marathon in under 4 hours 30 minutes.

Naomi said, “I’m running the London Marathon to support the Salvation Army in Winton, a place that’s been so important to me growing up. It’s incredible to see the impact they’ve had on the community, offering a space where people can find support during difficult times. The money raised from my run will go towards developing the next-door café, and I hope this helps keep that space thriving for everyone who needs it.”

Naomi’s connection to the Salvation Army runs deep. She is a Salvationist – a member of the church and one of her fondest memories is the post-meeting gatherings in the café, where laughter and camaraderie flow as freely as the tea and coffee.

“The conversations and catchups we have often leave me in tears from laughter—it’s such a warm, supportive atmosphere that always brings people closer together.”

Preparing for the marathon hasn’t been easy. Naomi has been training three times a week, guided by the Runna app, but she’s faced her share of challenges, including knee pain and foot discomfort. Despite these hurdles, she remains determined to push through.

Naomi said, “My personal goal is simply to finish the marathon. Ideally, I’d love to complete it in under 4 hours 30 minutes, but honestly, just crossing the finish line will be an achievement for me.”

When she does cross that finish line, Naomi plans to celebrate with a cold Coke, some sweets, and a well-deserved massage. But the real reward will be knowing that her efforts are helping to preserve a vital community space for Winton.
