Songster Brigade
Our adult choir (14+), called the Songster Brigade, has about 30 members and is led by Songster Leader Wendy Keller. With a wide repertoire at their disposal, the Songsters sing at our services on a Sunday as well as at other engagements.
Singing Company
The junior choir, or Singing Company, is led by Singing Company Leader Kerry Ellis. It is made up of young people who enjoy singing a wide variety of music and can be heard in our Sunday morning worship.
Timbrel Brigade
The Timbrel Brigade is traditionally one of the most recognisable elements of a Salvation Army open air meeting. Our Timbrel Brigade, under the leadership of Celia Ellis, participates at special meetings and events, as well as our open air meetings.
Senior Band
Our band has about 25 players across all ages (14+). It is under the leadership of Bandmaster Veronica Addis. The band plays during our worship on a Sunday and has other engagements during the year, being especially busy at Christmas.
Young People’s Band
The young people’s band is for members aged 7-18 years who play or are learning to play a brass instrument. It is currently under the leadership of Young People's Band Leader Alex Addis and plays during some of our worship meetings on a Sunday and at other engagements.
We are very pleased to be able to offer local schools our Starfish mentoring programme. The aim of Starfish is to make a difference to young people, one by one. This is inspired by the story of the man who – one by one – throws stranded starfish back into the sea. Challenged on what difference it can possibly make to the thousands of beached starfish around him, he replies, ‘It made a difference to that one!’
Starfish is offered to local schools, free of charge, providing early help focused on emotional health and wellbeing. Working within a school’s student wellbeing support, Starfish provides committed and trusted adults to work with young people who need some additional support, without which they would be at risk of not meeting their full potential.
In Boston we have eight mentors currently supporting young people in Boston Pioneers Academy, Park Academy, Tower Road Academy and Thomas Middlecott Academy. The young people have an initial offer of ten weeks support, however this can be extended if further support is needed.
Anyone over the age of 21 can be a mentor, you do not need to be a member of The Salvation Army. Anyone with time to give, ears to listen and an open heart can walk alongside a young person – an hour or so a week can be enough to make a significant impact. Mentors will need to apply through The Salvation Army’s volunteer recruitment portal, attend a two day residential training course, complete some online training, and have an enhanced background check. The time commitment is 1.5 to 2 hours per mentee per week, which includes a 45-60 minute mentoring session in school. For further information regarding The Starfish Programme or becoming a mentor please contact our Starfish Coordinator -sarah.robinson@salvationarmy.org.uk
