Rebuilding lives: Overcoming Addiction
deaths from drug overdoses can, and must be prevented
Every day, 18 people in the UK die from drugs – 10 of which as a result of drug poisoning involving an opioid. These lives might be saved by naloxone.
Behind every statistic is a person – a son or daughter, a friend, a neighbour – whose death was often preventable.
Every death from a drug overdose is a tragedy, but even more so when that life could have been saved. Naloxone is an overdose antidote which is safe, effective and easy to use.
Naloxone saves lives
Many of these deaths are linked to opioids such as heroin and some prescription painkillers.
When someone overdoses on opioids, naloxone can mean the difference between life and death.
What we are calling for
The Salvation Army is campaigning for:
- A public health emergency to be declared on drug-related deaths
- Make naloxone more widely available in our communities to tackle overdoses
- Invest in harm reduction and treatment services, so people can get the help they need when they need it. are not left without help when they are most at risk
Drug-related deaths are not inevitable. With the right political will, they can be reduced.
