Retiring Collection for Gweru Citadel’s Helping Hand Appeal
As you know, Achuwa, a Salvationist from Zimbabwe, has been a part of our corps family as she visited her son in Maidenhead following the sudden death of her sister. Achuwa has asked if we would be willing to donate to her corps Helping Hand appeal, and having spoken to her corps officers, Captains Chiedza and Webster Sandukina, I am sure we would all welcome the opportunity to contribute to their ongoing ministry. To this end, we will take retiring collections on this Sunday and next Sunday mornings (11 & 18 May). Please do all you can to support our comrades.

Sunday, 11th May – Prayer Focus and Mission Support
As part of our daily prayer diary this Sunday, 11th May, we will be praying for Lt. Desire and Mpumelelo Dathini, along with their two daughters and son. The Dathinis serve as Corps Officers at Goodwood Corps in Cape Town, South Africa, while also holding the role of Divisional Youth Officers – a dual appointment that keeps them deeply engaged in both community service and ministry.
In addition to our prayers, we are pleased to extend our support through a donation of £5,000 from our Corps Missionary Fund at Maidenhead, aimed at furthering the impactful work being carried out by our fellow Salvationists at Goodwood Corps.
Current Mission Activities at Goodwood Corps
- Food Parcel Pantry: Providing critical support to Corps members and community residents during emergencies, such as fires, natural disasters, or sudden financial hardship. Assistance includes food parcels or vouchers (PicknPay/Shoprite) valued at approximately R500, typically extended for up to three months or as long as supplies permit.
- Weekly Feeding Scheme: Serving approximately 120 individuals every Wednesday with a freshly cooked meal. The average cost per meal is around R50 per person, amounting to significant monthly support for those in need.
- School and Family Support: Collaborating with local schools to provide weekly fruit (about 200 pieces) and essential food parcels to families in need, at an estimated cost of R500 per week.
- Community Outreach Initiatives: Planning to extend support to local old age homes through toiletry drives and provide blankets and basic essentials to the homeless.
- Vegetable Community Garden: Establishing a community garden managed by the women’s ministry team, with produce to be used in the feeding scheme, promoting sustainability and self-reliance.
- Aftercare Programme: Launching in April 2025, this initiative will provide meals, homework support, and general care to students, fostering a supportive learning environment.
As we hold the Dathini family in our thoughts and prayers this week, let us also remember the broader mission they champion through Goodwood Corps, bringing hope and practical assistance to their community. May God richly bless them.

Captain’s Log
Captain Jonathan and Lieutenant Armour-Bearer
Last Sunday was Candidates’ Sunday, and we explored the inspiring story of Captain Jonathan and his armour bearer from 1 Samuel 14. In these challenging times for our Army, we reflected on what it means to be heroes in God's service.
The situation in ancient Israel seemed dire – the Philistines had the upper hand, many Israelites had defected or deserted, and King Saul's army had dwindled to just 600 men. Yet in these disheartening circumstances, Captain Jonathan and his faithful armour bearer decided to take action. They left the safety of camp to face the enemy, confident that "nothing can hinder the LORD. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!"
Key takeaways:
1. God can accomplish his purposes with just a few faithful servants – what matters is not our numbers but our faith in his power.
2. When we focus on God's promises rather than our disheartening circumstances, we find courage to take bold steps of faith.
3. Following God's call often involves stepping out of our comfort zones, taking risks, and trusting him completely.
How might God be calling you to be one of the few? Perhaps he's asking you to consider officership, becoming a Territorial Envoy, or serving as a local officer. While it's comfortable to remain where we are (like Saul under the pomegranate tree), God's greatest work often happens when we say with Jesus, "I want your will to be done, not mine."
The Salvation Army needs modern-day heroes – Captain Jonathan and Lieutenant Armour Bearer – who trust that God can do extraordinary things through ordinary people who step out in faith.
May God bless you as you listen for his voice and consider how he might be calling you to join his battle.
God bless you this week.
Rob Westwood-Payne

SUNDAY 11 May: SABBATH PRAYER
Resurrection reflections – Bread of restoration (John 21:1-14)
This story brings us the discouraged, disorientated, directionless disciples who aren’t sure what they’re supposed to do next, so they go back to the old, familiar ways of night-time fishing. But their story isn’t over; it’s about to begin. Jesus comes with fish and bread, to restore their faith and reignite their zeal and courage.
Have you ‘gone fishing’? Are you avoiding something because it feels altogether too daunting or confusing? Are you unsure whether you’ve got what it takes to do the next thing? What do you need to ask Jesus for? What might he be giving you, to restore your strength and confidence? (Lyndall Bywater, UKI Boiler Room Team)
MONDAY 12 May: SHARING THE GOOD NEWS
War Cry
Thank you, Lord, for the lives that have been changed as a result of the ministry of the War Cry. We pray that even more people will come to know you through the pages of the magazine and the hundreds of people who are involved in its distribution every week. Bless the team who work to put the magazine together and continue to give them creativity and inspiration. Amen. (Major Andrew Stone – Editor)
TUESDAY 13 May: SERVING AND CARING
Mental Health Awareness Week (12-18 May 2025)
Dear Lord, I pray for all of us who are affected by mental health struggles. Please give us hope, and remind us that we are special, that you love us and that you are always there beside us. I pray that we will move forward in our recovery journey, and that you will help us to be there for others, to support and understand them in their recovery too. (Major Lynden Gibbs, Core Recovery Development Officer)
WEDNESDAY 14 May: GROWING IN FAITH
North East Division
Pray for the continued identification and release of local leadership across the division. We are seeing people come forward, expressing a wish to discern what God is saying to them. Pray for wisdom as these conversations continue. We have eight young people on the latest cohort of our Transformers programme. We thank God for them and pray that God will continue to speak to them powerfully through the programme teaching experience, and through the support of their mentors. (Major David Burns, Divisional Commander).
THURSDAY 15 May: INTERNATIONAL SALVATION ARMY
USA Southern Territory
The USA Southern Territory covers Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. We give thanks for many years of faithful service, courageous witness and compassionate caring which The Salvation Army has offered across these states, and pray today that God will give fresh vision for communicating the good news of Jesus, especially to young people and children. We pray for the territorial leadership team, Commissioners Kelly and Donna Igleheart and Colonel Deborah Sedlar. (Lyndall Bywater, UKI Boiler Room Team)
FRIDAY 16 May: JUSTICE AND RECONCILIATION
Welfare Reform
Planned welfare reforms could leave struggling people in greater hardship, especially people with disabilities or mental health challenges. ‘Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless’ (Isaiah 1:17). We pray for compassionate policy decisions that prioritise justice and dignity. May churches and communities rise to support those in need, advocating for fair provisions and offering practical help to those who are at risk of falling further into poverty. (Captain John Clifton, Territorial Justice and Reconciliation Officer).
SATURDAY 17 May: CARE FOR CREATION
Super Space!
Thank you, God, for the wonderful world you have made, and for the sun, moon and stars.
Thank you for making the sun that gives our world warmth and light.
Thank you for making the moon to shine and the stars to twinkle in the night sky.
Thank you for making the planets that help form the universe, but especially for the planet where we live.
Thank you, God, that you made our wonderful world. Please help us to look after your world and each other.
(Rachel Gotobed, Outreach Mission Partner – Family Ministries)
