Bringing the joy of Christmas to families

Kristen's Story

At Christmas, The Salvation Army is there for thousands of people, offering practical support, care and a powerful reminder that they are not alone.

For us love isn’t just a feeling. It’s food on the table, warmth in winter and someone to talk to when you feel alone. This Christmas, we’re turning compassion into action in every community.

We are there for mums like Kristen, who works hard to provide for her daughter but struggles to balance bills and afford basic everyday items like school uniforms throughout the year.

Kristen receives a Christmas care package from one of our officers at her local church.

Kristen has been coming to her local Salvation Army for a few months.

She says: “I came here to get help and they supported me with the Community Pantry which provides food.  You can make a small donation and that gets you extra food and it’s very affordable. I get quite a lot. I’ll typically get six ready meals, tins, fruit, veg, pet food, cleaning essentials, shampoo and they make sure you have enough.”

Coming to The Salvation Army on a weekly basis boosts her morale too. She says: “I can have a laugh and a chat with people when I come here. Things go on here like bingo and quizzes and a weekly lunch. It’s nice when people come together who have the same struggles, no matter what their age, race and religion.”

Life would be a huge struggle without The Salvation Army… It’s thanks to places like this that I am able to provide for my daughter.

This Christmas The Salvation Army is putting belief into action, showing love where it’s needed most. We’re there for people who are experiencing homelessness, poverty or hardship, bringing warmth. From a hot meal on a freezing night, to a Christmas present for a child who might otherwise go without – we’re here to show that love is alive, active and near.
