A SPARROW AND PENTECOST
I gazed on the roof tops - sort of browny-grey mix and still I wouldn’t have seen it if it hadn’t moved! It was a little bird - a sparrow! It was content - chirping - then resting, only revealing it’s presence when it moved - otherwise silent and still.
It reminded me of the Holy Spirit - God’s Holy Spirit. That part of God that we only feel and see when He moves. But when He does move He certainly makes His Presence felt.
Whitsun is the time in the Christian calendar when we remember and celebrate the
coming of God’s Holy Spirit, an event in danger of being lost. We mustn’t let that happen. That’s where the power is.
Pentecost - that very first Whitsun when the Holy Spirit came, in what appeared to be tongues of fire sitting on the heads of the first Disciples as they gathered together behind closed doors. There was also a wind, a mighty rushing wind.
Like a wind, which we can only hear and feel and see the evidence of, God’s Holy Spirit comes. But we have to be still to feel Him near. Still within ourselves and our minds. With a quiet heart and a quiet mind we can watch and wait for Him to move. Like my sparrow! The little bird that the Bible tells us Jesus cared about…. And He cares for you and for me much much more through the person of His Holy Spirit.
So during this Whitsun, this time of Pentecost, let’s watch … and wait …. and listen too … And as we do, His still small voice will reassure us that He is here.
May God Bless You as you feel Him near.
