Winton Salvation Army hosts a summer cruise for over 60s

published on 7 Jul 2025

For many older adults in Winton, the thought of setting sail on a luxury cruise may seem like a distant dream. But this summer, The Salvation Army on Latimer Road is bringing the adventure—and the warmth of friendship—right to their doorstep.

On 30th and 31st July 2025, the Winton Salvation Army Community Centre will transform into the cruise ship Sally Anne, welcoming the Over 60s group for their much-loved "Holiday at Home" programme. This two-day event promises laughter, delicious food, and a whirlwind of activities—all inspired by a Caribbean voyage, without ever leaving Winton.

For just £15 per day or £25 for both days, attendees will enjoy a two-course meal, refreshments, and a full itinerary of entertainment. From lively music to crafts and themed games, the event is designed to combat loneliness and create lasting memories for Winton’s older residents. Think of pebble art, glass painting, flower arranging, stamping, cards, tea bag folding , diamond art, and decoupage.

Attendees will be pampered with sessions of foot care, head and neck and massages. French Boules, croquet and hoopla rings are some of the outdoor games to be enjoyed in the community centre’s lovely garden. There will be armchair exercises, and the peak of the activities would be an afternoon with a magician .

Flower arranging is one of the fun activities lined up for attendees.

Elizabeth Dear, the community care secretary at Winton Salvation Army and one of the organisers is excited about the upcoming holiday experience.

Elizabeth said: "Many of our older friends miss the holidays they once enjoyed or never had the chance to experience. ‘Holiday at Home’ lets them step into a world of fun and friendship—even if just for a couple of days. Seeing their faces light up as the hall turns into a cruise ship is the best reward."

Fellow organiser and Home League secretary at Winton Salvation Army, Lin Anderson added: "Loneliness can hit hard as people age, but this event is about more than just activities—it’s about building a community. Last year, we had guests dancing, sharing stories, and leaving with new friends. This year’s Caribbean theme will bring even more joy, and we can’t wait to set sail together!"

The Salvation Army Winton has run similar programmes in the past, with overwhelming enthusiasm from participants. While final details are still being confirmed, the event will mirror last year’s success, offering a mix of relaxation and excitement.
