The Salvation Army in Wales to host Senedd election debate

published on 17 Apr 2026

Politicians will face questions on key issues for the forthcoming Welsh election at an event in Newport chaired by The Most Reverend Cherry Vann, Archbishop of Wales.

Hosted by The Salvation Army, the election hustings take place on Wednesday 22 April, beginning at 7.00pm in The Salvation Army church, Hill Street.

It will bring together representatives of the major political parties for a wide‑ranging and respectful political discussion from a faith perspective. Running for around two hours with a question-and-answer format, questions will be submitted in advance by representatives of churches and faith communities as well as Voluntary organisations and sector partners from across Wales.

The Senedd election takes place on 7 May

Invitations have been sent to representatives of the six highest polling political parties in Wales which are Labour, Conservative, Plaid Cymru, Liberal Democrats, Reform and The Green Party.

Discussion will focus on issues affecting communities across Wales, with an emphasis on justice, reconciliation and the wellbeing of society as a whole.

Captain Kathryn Stowers, who runs The Salvation Army church in Newport, explained why the church is opening its doors to voters:

“We feel it is important to provide a safe space for people of faith to ask questions of candidates for the forthcoming Senedd elections. Hosting it at The Salvation Army Hall with the Archbishop of Wales presiding sends a positive message to politicians and the public that we are united in seeking justice and reconciliation through political engagement.”

Questions will come mainly from those sent in ahead of time, with time for additional questions on the night. Churches, faith groups and voluntary and social sector partners are invited to attend or to nominate one representative, who may bring up to four other people from their community.

Please send advance questions and details of those wishing to attend to wales@salvationarmy.org.uk

Help us to continue to be there for people in their hour of need.
