Salvation Army Southend launches Health Hub

published on 23 Apr 2025

The Salvation Army in Southend will strengthen its community support later this month when it launches a health hub at its church in the city.

The church and charity’s community focus group had been exploring better ways to serve the community. Through attending various council meetings and talking to other partners, health groups and agencies, they have discovered that the over-60s in the city have some of the lowest levels of health engagement, only seeking health care when symptoms arise or when it is necessary. Some wards in the city have up to 10 years life expectancy below the national average.

On 29 April from 11am to 1pm, the community will be invited to ‘Live Well Age Well’ at The Southend Citadel. The event is being held in conjunction with partners including Age Concern Southend, NHS services and Southend-on-Sea City Council. It will aim to offer a range of services designed to promote physical health, mental well-being, and social engagement.

Major Nicola Brooksbank leads The Salvation Army in Southend and explained why she believed the hub is important.

She said: “Recognising the vital contributions of our community, we are dedicated to supporting their health and well-being. The Health Hub offers a holistic approach, providing essential services and fostering social connection to enhance the fullness of life in our community.

“We work with many other agencies through partnership working, forums and networking events. Once we had discussed the idea we just asked if people were interested, and the response was overwhelming.”

The Health Hub will be staffed by a combination of healthcare professionals and volunteers committed to delivering compassionate and personalised care. Organisations due to attend include Age Concern Southend which offers services such as befriending, dementia day care and various classes and activities.

The Salvation Army in Southend offers activities throughout the week including its Employment Plus Service which helps people get job-ready on Wednesdays, and a friendship club on the first Friday of the month. For more details, go to www.salvationarmy.org.uk/southend-citadel
