The Salvation Army in Luton appeals for Moses baskets to welcome 2026 newborns
published on 24 Dec 2025
The Salvation Army in Luton has issued a special appeal for donations of Moses baskets and other essential large items for babies. The church and charity provides these to struggling families and a shortage of donations means it cannot currently fulfil new requests. It is specifically seeking Moses baskets to provide a safe first bed for babies born in the early days of 2026.
The Baby Bank was born from encounters with families in desperate circumstances, including parents forced to dilute infant formula. It operates through referrals from health visitors, social prescribers and GPs, ensuring support reaches those most in need. Since June 2025 it has provided essential items such as nappies, toiletries, prams, baby baths, playmats and newborn care packs to many local parents. The call for Moses baskets highlights an ongoing, specific need for the most basic equipment required for a newborn’s safe sleep.
Vikki Herbert, leader of The Salvation Army in Luton, said: “For an expectant parent, preparing a safe, peaceful space for their newborn is a fundamental act of love and hope. For many families in Luton, severe financial hardship makes providing even this basic necessity feel like an impossible dream. To struggling families something as essential as a safe place for their baby to sleep can become a source of immense anxiety.
