Salvation Army launches Dementia-friendly singing group in Weston-super-Mare

A new monthly singing group specifically designed for people living with dementia and their carers is launching in Weston-super-Mare this September.

The Salvation Army’s Singing by Heart programme kicked off last week Friday, 11th September 2026, at the church and charity’s Carlton Street building, offering a free, welcoming space to connect, reminisce, and find joy through music.

The relaxed sessions run from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm, including time for refreshments and socialising. The group will then meet on the second Friday of each month, with future dates scheduled for 9th October, 13th November, and 11th December. Carers are warmly welcomed and essential where health needs dictate. No booking is required – people can simply turn up.

The initiative uses a mix of well-known popular songs and classic hymns from across the decades. Research shows that music can unlock memories and feelings for people living with dementia, encouraging communication and positive emotional responses.

The launch forms part of a wider response by The Salvation Army to the growing need for dementia support across the UK and Ireland. Major Christa Beeldman, who leads The Salvation Army in Weston-super-Mare, said the group is an example of the “practical and joyful ways” they support the community.
