Newport hosts Canadian Choir on only Welsh date

published on 1 Jul 2025

The only Welsh stop on a UK Tour by the Salvation Army’s Canadian Staff Songsters has been announced just in time for Canada Day (Tuesday 1 July 2025), celebrating the anniversary of the Canadian Confederation in 1867.

The performance at Newport Cathedral is at 7.30pm on Thursday 10 July. Captain Kathryn Stowers leads The Salvation Army church in Newport and says it’s a rare opportunity in Wales to hear this internationally renowned choir.

Captain Kathryn said:

“We are delighted to welcome the Canadian Staff Songsters to the city as part of their UK tour. This will be the group’s only stop in Wales, and it is exciting that we are hosting them on July 10 at Newport Cathedral, one of our most historic places of worship, and sharing news of the mission and ministry of Newport Citadel with them.”

The current Canadian Staff Songsters was re-established in 2016 to mark the 100th anniversary of the original singing group, which had been formed in 1916.

Its leader and conductor is Cathie Koehnen:

“We are excited to be coming to Newport to share our “His Light in Us” concert. We are a choir that sings to share the light of Christ with others. We present an eclectic mix of choral music and look forward to meeting people from your community.”

The Canadian Songsters UK tour begins on July 4 at Chelmsford, taking in Bromley, Peterborough, Bedlington and Leek before ending on July 11 in Birmingham
