Luton Salvation Army welcomes families to affordable summer fun days

The Salvation Army in Luton is stepping up to support local families this summer with two affordable fun days, packed with activities and practical help to ease the cost-of-living squeeze.

Running on Fridays, August 7th and August 21st, the free-flowing “drop-in” events—held from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Salvation Army hall on 1 Vicarage Street—are designed to give parents a budget-friendly break while keeping children aged 0–10 entertained with crafts, games, and community spirit.

With limited spaces for 40 children per session to keep things personal and relaxed, each themed day (including “Coming Home”, “Community”, and “We're All Loved”) offers take-home crafts and a warm welcome. Going beyond fun, the church is also tackling back-to-school costs head-on by giving away free school uniforms on August 7th, ensuring families get both a memorable morning out and tangible support for the year ahead.

These events are all about supporting our local families during the summer break. We know the holidays can be a challenging time for parents, both financially and logistically, and with the cost-of-living crisis still hitting hard, every little bit of help matters. We wanted to create a fun, safe, and most importantly, affordable space where families can make happy memories together – and where we can also offer that extra helping hand with uniforms,

Many Salvation Army churches and community centres across the country offer summer activities for children who might otherwise not have any sort of summer break, and Luton is proud to be part of that national effort.

The events are fully indoors, so the fun is guaranteed whatever the British weather brings. Inflatables will be a key attraction, with a dedicated bouncy castle for the under-3s alongside a rotating selection of slides, bouncy castles, and soft play areas. A designated and safely sectioned-off Toddler Zone will also be available, featuring toys from the centre's regular toddler group.

Extra support laid on by The Salvation Army churches and community centres in the summer helps feed children who relied on school dinners for their only proper meal of the day.
