Free school uniform bank opens for families in Sudbury

published on 3 Aug 2023

The Salvation Army in Sudbury is offering free school uniforms to families who need support as the cost-of-living crisis continues to affect many across the East of England.

Quality second hand school shirts, polo tops, shorts, jumpers, cardigans, trousers, pinafores, summer dresses and PE kits are available, with occasional new items donated as well. The uniform bank will be available at The Salvation Army located on 1 Station Road on Thursday and Friday, 10 and 11 August between 9.30am and 12 noon.

Families can donate used school clothing to The Salvation Army charity shop (at the same address as the church) on Mon, Tues, Thurs and Friday mornings (9-1pm) before the uniform bank opens on 10 and 11 August.

The uniform bank mainly covers primary-aged children who attend local schools as demand for help increases with more people than ever struggling to make ends meet.

Lieutenant Patsy Attwood, church leader of The Salvation Army Sudbury said:

“Getting ready for the new school year is stressful enough as it is. Having a free uniform that fits properly is one less thing to worry about. Parents are very concerned about the high costs of school uniforms so easing things in this way can help them to overcome back-to-school costs. It is real privilege to be able to serve the community in this way.”

The uniform bank is another way in which The Salvation Army in Sudbury supports people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis as more people than ever are being pushed into poverty. The Christian church and charity also supports adults and children through the year who need clothing, with referrals from the food bank. The church offers pastoral support to local people at their coffee morning at the church on Thursdays (9-12pm) with free hot drinks and low-cost sandwiches and rolls.

If members of the public would like to volunteer their time to help run the uniform bank next week, please phone the church and leave a message on 01787 310187.
