Consett Salvation Army to host Christmas Day celebration

published on 15 Dec 2025

An army of volunteers are ready to welcome people to Consett Salvation Army on Christmas Day as it hosts a celebration and dinner.

On December 25, the church and charity will be hosting a festive treat with a service and songs, delicious dinner, games, a quiz, the King’s speech and a gift for those who may be facing the day on their own or fancy doing something different. They will also provide a festive packed tea to take home.

Hosted by Consett Salvation Army leader LT Wendy Verheij and her wonderful team of volunteers, the church in Sherburn Terrace will be open to people of all ages from 10.45am to 3.30pm.

Last year they had around 30 people attend including Monica, 73, and David, 72. Monica said: “There was a lovely service given by Wendy then we had a quiz, games, food and crackers. They provided a full Christmas dinner with soup, dinner and pudding, then After Eight mints and mince pies. We were full up, but then they also gave us our tea to take home!

“We really enjoyed it. We were there until 3.30pm and then Wendy said she would take us home. When we arrived back our neighbours were waving at us because they knew where we’d been. We felt like royalty for a day!

“Everyone who came also got to take home a present, which was very special.”

LT Wendy said: “We understand that the festive season isn’t always easy, some might be spending it alone, missing loved ones or facing financial challenges that make Christmas feel out of reach. Perhaps you’re a single parent looking for company while the kids enjoy fun activities or struggling as a family this year.

“We hosted Christmas Day last year and it was such good fun, we had lots of volunteers providing food, entertainment and a listening ear for those who just wanted a quiet moment.

“Christmas is about connection so again this year we’re offering a warm and safe space to share the day with others. You are not alone this Christmas. Let’s celebrate the season together in love and community at Consett Salvation Army.”

They are also looking for volunteers to help out.

Nikki, a volunteer who cooked dinner last year and will be doing the same again this year, said: “People know if they come to Consett Salvation Army they don’t get judged, they are taken as they are and are given lots of love. One couple cried when they were invited because they didn’t think it was for them, but it was for everyone.”
