Bristol Easton Salvation Army compiles community story cookbook

From cherished family secrets passed down through generations to vibrant dishes that reflect the diversity of the church and community, The Salvation Army in Bristol Easton is inviting anyone who worships with them, attends weekly activities or recovery support groups to share their favourite recipes for a new community cookbook that aims to capture the rich cultural tapestry of the area.

Kim Whyard, who leads the church and charity on Hassell Drive says the project seeks to bring together people from all backgrounds and aim to go to print in November. The cookbook will be printed and sold at the church.

Kim said, “Food has a beautiful way of connecting people. We’re not just collecting recipes—we’re gathering stories. We have Somali, Polish, Spanish, Zimbabwean, and Colombian families among our regular groups, as well as older locals with recipes that have never been written down. This cookbook will be a celebration of who we are, together.”

There are no restrictions on who can submit a recipe, and participants are encouraged to include a photo and a short story explaining what makes their dish meaningful. For submissions contact Kim on: Kim.Whyard@salvationarmy.org.uk

Although timelines for submission and publication are still being developed, the vision is clear: a cookbook by the community, for the community—full of flavour, history, and heart.

The Salvation Army Bristol Easton Corps serves its vibrant community through diverse, practical initiatives rooted in compassion. They offer a welcoming place of worship while providing tangible support, such as food parcels and a lunch club, to address immediate needs in Easton and beyond. Additionally, they offer warm hubs during winter and host several support groups for people recovering from alcohol and/or drug addiction.
