Our building project

The Leigh-on-Sea Salvation Army Corps has been situated in its present building on the corner of Elm Road and Glendale Gardens since it was built in the 1930s and despite additions to the rear of the building to house our community work, the main church building has remained very much in its original form.

Our desire with this project is to modernise the building, particularly focusing on the entrances, to make it much more accessible and appealing to the local community. The main entrance to the building will be moving to Glendale Gardens, with a stunning modern and glass fronted addition. This will provide a more welcoming reception area to our suite of buildings and allow better access to all the facilities.

As an integral part of this project, we will be moving out of our building from March until winter 2018 to allow the building work to take place.

Details of the temporary locations for our Sunday services, day centre, pre-school and the rest of our weekday programme can be found below.

Our Sunday worship is centred on Jesus and forms an important part of our church life. It gives us a chance to get together to spend time in worship to God, praying and reflecting on the Bible. Our 10am service is open to all and you will receive a warm welcome from the moment you step through the door.

Our services are relaxed, but respectful and include varied music which can be inspiring as well as challenging. We use a mixture of traditional and contemporary styles. As well as congregational singing, there are typically items from our adult and junior choirs and from our adult and junior brass bands.

The Christian teaching is for all ages; the service includes a children's spot which provides fun Christian teaching which is enjoyed by all. There is also a Sunday Club for the children following the 10am service.

To provide opportunities for friendship and informal relaxed discussion, we also offer an invitation to meet in one of our small group sessions currently held on the 2nd Friday of the month at 7pm. For further details please feel free to call into the centre or telephone 01702 716607 or 01702 476185.

Our children’s ministries

Within the children's ministry we have a wide range of weekly activities.

Our singing company (children's choir) sing every week in our Sunday service and rehearse every week. Our Young People’s Band (children's brass band) also rehearses weekly and play during numerous services throughout the year.

Every Sunday morning after the church service the children go into Sunday School where they are taught about the bible in fun and different ways. The older children go into a cell group (bible study) where they can talk about how the bible relates to their lives.

On the first Sunday night of every month we have 'Only boys/girls allowed' (12+) where they can get together and enjoy each other’s fellowship.

On the 3rd Sunday of every month we have a 'Youth Fellowship' (13+) where members of our church invite the youth into their homes so they can all get to know each other better and have fun.

Day Centre

Temporary arrangements during building work at our church and community centre on Glendale Gardens/Elm Road:

Location: Leigh Road Baptist Church, Marguerite Drive, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1NN

Opening hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm

We offer day care to older people who require support which will enable them to remain living in their own homes. The day care offered includes transport to and from the centre, lunch, tea, coffee and toast and other refreshments, entertainment as well as the company of other service users and staff and volunteers. In addition, this service can mean carers are able to gain some respite and time for themselves, safe in the knowledge that their loved one is being well looked after.

If you would like any further information please contact Elaine Jordan, the Day Centre Supervisor, on 01702 478092 or elaine.jordan@salvationarmy.org.uk.

Anyone interested in the day centre is welcome to drop by and have a look round.

Our pre-school

Temporary location during building work at our church and community centre on Glendale Gardens/Elm Road: Highlands Methodist Church, Sutherland Boulevard, Leigh-on-Sea, SS9 3PT

Smiley Pre-School caters for 30 children per day aged 2 ½ - 5yrs old. Sessions run on Monday to Friday from 9:15am-12:15pm (term time only).

We are Ofsted registered and maintained an ‘Outstanding' Ofsted report in September 2017.

All of our Smiley Pre-School staff are mature, fully police checked and hold appropriate childcare qualifications. With a low staff turnover the children are able to build strong relationships with the staff; this helps them to feel safe and secure with a positive attitude to learning. Our weekly programme is linked with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Here at Smiley Pre-School we focus on developing strong parent/carer relationships and we enjoy taking time to speak to parents about their child(ren). Parents are welcome to pop in at any time; we have an open door policy. We also contact parents to re-assure them that their child has settled if problems arise at ‘dropping off' time.

If you would like more information please contact Hilary Johnston (Pre-School Supervisor) on 01702 478092 or email:hilary.johnston@salvationarmy.org.uk
