The George Steven Community Hub

The Community Choices Programme at the George Steven Community Hub in Kilbirnie is a specialist support service for adults with learning and physical disabilities and individuals with mental health conditions. We offer structured activities to promote independence, creativity, and wellbeing. This service is registered with the Care Inspectorate and currently operates from 10.00am – 3.00pm. There is a charge for this programme and Service Users can choose from a wide range of activities tailored to their interests and needs including:

• Bowling: Social and physical engagement in a fun setting
• Art: Creative expression through painting, drawing, and crafts
• Baking & Cooking: Hands-on learning of kitchen skills and nutrition
• Exercise: Physical activity to promote health and teamwork
• Gardening: Outdoor therapeutic work in the hub’s garden and polytunnel
• Drama & Music: Confidence-building through performance and rhythm

These activities are designed to foster life skills, social interaction and personal growth.

Our weekly Social Group starts at 6.15pm – 8.15pm and runs on a Wednesday night. This group is predominately for adults with learning and physical disabilities and individuals with mental health conditions. This group is designed to be a welcoming, inclusive space designed to encourage connection, enjoyment, and personal development through fun and engaging activities. Attendees can participate in:

• Video games
• Pool
• Darts
• Board Games 

There is a small charge of £7.50 for this group, with a tuck shop available for all your sweet tooth needs. Coffee, tea and other refreshments are available.

Within the Community Hub, we currently offer varied groups and projects to support those in our local community. Within these groups we aim to support people to gain employment, reduce isolation, improve mental health and wellbeing and create opportunities for lasting friendship. Some of the activities include:

• Low impact exercise class – Every Wednesday 9.30am -10.15am
• Conversation Café – Every Friday 1.00pm-2.30pm
• Ladies’ Group – Every Thursday 10.00am – 12.00pm
• CHAP Support – Every Thursday 9.00am – 4.30pm
• Community Garden – Monday to Friday – 10.00am – 3.00pm
• Digital Hub and Lending Library – Days and Times dependent on availability
• Digital Inclusion Group – Mondays – 11.00am – 1.00pm

The Hope Café is a warm, community-focused space run by The Salvation Army, created to bring people together over great food and genuine hospitality. More than just a place to eat, the café serves as a welcoming hub where everyone is valued. We offer freshly prepared meals, and a commitment to supporting the local community. 

Opening hours Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10.00am – 2.00pm.

In line with The Salvation Army’s Mission Priority “Care for Creation”, our low-cost charity shop is dedicated to supporting the local community by offering affordable, pre-loved clothing, shoes and accessories for everyone. Run with the help of volunteers, the shop provides a welcoming space where people can find quality goods at budget-friendly prices, while also giving a second life to these items. Every purchase directly helps fund vital community programmes and services, ensuring that the support stays right here in the local area. More than just a shop, it’s a place where neighbours look out for one another and positive change begins. Please consider donating your good quality clothes, shoes and accessories here.

The Music Man Project Kilbirnie is a joyful, inclusive music group that provides people with learning disabilities a chance to express themselves, build confidence and connect with others through the power of music. Led with enthusiasm and care, the sessions encourage participants to develop their musical abilities while enjoying friendship, creativity and a strong sense of belonging. Whether performing, learning new songs or simply sharing the love of music together, the Music Man Project Kilbirnie brings energy and pride to the local community and celebrates the talents of every individual.

We are delighted to have our very own chaplain serving within the George Steven Community Hub. Deanna provides a welcoming, supportive, listening ear  for individuals and families from all walks of life who would like to talk to someone. Her role is to listen with compassion, offer spiritual and emotional guidance and help connect people with resources that promote well-being and resilience. In this diverse and vibrant setting, our Chaplain strives to promote a sense of belonging, hope and dignity by meeting people where they are, whether in moments of crisis, change or celebration. Through respectful conversation, practical support, and a commitment to inclusivity, our Chaplin aims to strengthen the community by nurturing connection, understanding and care.

Our Employment Plus service works alongside jobseekers to understand their needs and goals and we tailor our service to fit the needs of each individual. We also provide training opportunities to support those interested in moving into work. Our Employability Practitioners thoroughly assess each jobseeker taking part in our programmes. We’re not just interested in employment history; we also want to get to know you and hear about your experiences and life goals. Participants benefit from one-to-one support and group workshops from our Employability Practitioners. This enables us to better understand the person’s whole character and guide them to the resources and training opportunities that best fit their needs. Participants are empowered to overcome any obstacles they face, whether that is building up self-esteem, overcoming health issues or facing their addictions.
