Model Railway Exhibition Fundraiser

Above image shows the Hornby Dublo 3 rail Royal Mail TPO picking up a mailbag.

April 18th and 19th saw our second Model Railway Exhibition raising funds for the community work in Canterbury.

This year the event was held at the Cartwright & Kelsey Primary School in Ash which allowed us to run a two day event. There were 10 layouts exhibited and several traders present. Although the attendance was down on last year, both the exhibitors and traders had a profitable weekend. It’s always fun to play trains! There was a mix of traditional railway modelling of several gauges together with a special Thomas The Tank Engine layout and a Thomas road and rail layout especially for the younger children and their obvious excitement was a joy to behold. Also in attendance was an original  vintage (c1950’s) Hornby Dublo 3 rail layout.

Approximately £350 was raised over the weekend to help support the Annexe drop-in centre which is open every weekday between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., serving free tea, coffee, soup etc.. Additionally, emergency clothing, bedding and food parcels are available. Employment Plus Local operates every Tuesday and Thursday offering assistance to jobseekers.

The Annexe & Employment Plus Local

The Annexe is adjacent to the main hall in Whitehorse Lane and is the base for our community work in the city. Here, every weekday, you will find a warm welcome and a refreshing cup of tea or coffee and other light refreshments, all free of charge. Emergency food parcels, clothing and bedding are also available for those in need. If you just want sit and relax or need to share a burden, our volunteers are always ready to help.

Additionally, on Tuesdays and Thursdays we operate Employment Plus Local which offers the unemployed the opportunity, in a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere, to search for jobs via the internet using our laptops. We also help with C.V.'s, email account creation, Universal Jobmatch (Government Gateway) account creation and other job related activities. Help with form filling, paper or on-line, is also available.

One to one help is available for those who would like additional assistance. Individual appointments can be arranged if required.

Our opening times are:-

  • Monday - Friday 10am - 2pm
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am - 2pm Employment Plus Local

The Annexe is usually closed Bank Holidays, Easter and Christmas.
